I would love to have suggestions for Gospel songs to play at the Indy Gospel Show next week. Naturally I would like to come up with songs that will not be played a dozen times and yet be beautiful tunes. Can you please help me?

My Favorites to play are a slow and a fast tune. The slow one is "Old Rugged Cross" and a bluegrass tempo tune is "Are You Washed in the Blood of the Lamb". The band I'm in ends all of our shows with the fast one. It's a great tune to do twin lines on and a call and response thing on the bridge like in the old Louvin Brothers vocal of the same tune.

It is hard to pick just one. Here are some ideas that others may not do:
"Blessed Assurance"
"Because He Lives"
"The Family of God"
"Born to Die" (Born to Lose with different words)
"Good bye World, Good bye" (very fast and has an interesting bridge.)
"The Lord's Prayer" a capella with big chords on C6
"Just as I am"
"We Shall See the King"
"Good Ol' Gospel Ship"
"The Lighthouse" (Hinsons)
"Consider the Lilies" (Hemphills with Weldon's (?) wonderful intro. I think the Rebel site has a clip of this intro.)
Actually, as I went back and listened to "Jernigan's Journey," it is more like the song, "Gonna Walk Right Out of this Valley."
I stand corrected about "Consider the Lilies" if you are absolutely sure, because Weldon probably did most of their recordings. It is a wonderful intro no matter who did it.

Holy, Holy, Holy is a good hymn for the pedal steel. However, up here in Minnesota we renamed it "Ole, Ole, Ole" and call it an old Scandinavian classic!

As another has said,
"Softly and Tenderly". This tune lies really well on the E9th neck. And it makes good use of the so-called "chromatic" strings.
"The Lord's Prayer" is a great one also. The difficulty on this one is making sure the player stays correct with the written chord progression. Lots of minors that are often played as majors by steelers who don't read music.
My all time favorite is, "In The Garden". This is a simple tune to play except towards the end where there is a psuedo diminished chord (going to a III chord), that modulates back to the I chord. Here again, it is important, IMHO, that the steel player play the written chord's harmony. Else gospel oriented listeners will notice the error quickly.
"Have Thine On Way Lord" is a very beautiful song and I have rarely heard it played on steel. I love to play this one. And there is a place where "dissonant" notes really stand out gracefully if executed correctly.
Praise our Precious Lord's holy name when ever songs are played that deify our maker,

Other than the ones mentioned,
I love the melody of 'There's something about that name' by Bill Gather. It would be a great steel song imho.
Another is 'Go rest high on a mountain' by Vince Gill.
I heard a piece of this done by Mr. Barrister (spelling?) from Nashville. Beautiful work and beautiful song.

I suggest: "Who At My Door is Standing,"
"Whispering Hope" and "Family Bible." All of these songs are great on steel. |

I have a rhythm track for the Bill Gaithers song 'Further Along', the track had the singers on one side, so I just deleted those folks & play it on both the standard guitar & the pedal steel guitar, its sounds great on steel. I played God Bless America and Further Along at a local festival just after the 9-11 attack, you could have heard a pin drop, it was a very good feeling - one of the best I have ever had playing pedal steel.

"Standing somewhere in the shadows you'll find Jesus" is a great old song and I don't believe it has ever been played here at the GSGA show. It may a little late now to do it if you haven't heard it or played it before now.
