Does anyone know how many strings and what the tuning was on Santo's steel?
Just curious.

Hi John, As far as I know Santo always played 8-string Fender non-pedal steel guitars. He recorded SleepWalk on a triple-8 Fender Custom. He played C#m7 tuning on that tune. That tuning has the same notes as E6 tuning. I don't know what other tunings he had on his T-8, but after SleepWalk he changed guitars, switched over to a D-8 Fender Stringmaster. Probably continued using C#m7 tuning, but I can't say for sure.

I have quote by Santo that he had A6 and E7 on the other necks.

As I write this I'm listening to a Santo and Johnny LP that I found in a junk bin some 20+ years ago. Apparently, they were popular in Italy many years post sleepwalk. The album that I'm listening to is called "Famosi Temi Da Films," and features tunes like Alfie and the theme from the godfather. Overdone arrangements that border on cheezy or in some cases cross the line. What is cool is that Santo's tone and approach is the same as sleep walk, (glissandos and chimes included) and is really an enjoyable listen. There is a picture of the bros on the back and Santo is seated at a triple neck fender. A lot of their "adult" output can be found on the download sites. Nice stuff if it 's your thing.

I always have a a lap or steel where I can play Sleepwalk in some form of E6. After all these years, it's hit or miss on the chimes. Sometimes, no problem and others Shocked

+1 "Prisoner of love" is one of my favorites. Another one I really like is "Magic is the Moonlight"

Sorry for the old thread rehash, but I just discovered their version of Deep Purple, and I'm in love with it!

Gonna be working out a version in C6...

If you've never heard their version of Summertime you're missing out! Their entire first album is all gold!

Funnily enough...my first band with me actually playing steel is starting to come together, and while I haven't fully won them over to the Hawaiian side (yet!), their catalogue is mostly jazz standards (including Summertime, as it happens!) so I'm having a lovely time playing them in C13. Santo and Johnny certainly played a lot in that genre and I've learned a lot from Basil H who likewise plays a lot of standards (but I'm not yet adept enough with the footwork to get the Fender 400 going on these tunes!).
