I have been immersed in Hawaiian music again, but this time more so with '50s and '60s Hawaiian music.

Some of my favorites:

Hawaiian Shores - Barney and Jules
Alfred Apaka - My Isle of Golden Dreams
All-Star Hawaiian Band
Echoes of Hawaii - Benny Kalama (thanks Jeff)
The Best of Hawaiian Slack Key - Gabby Pahinui
Party Hulas - Genoa Keawe
Soft Hawaiian Guitars (I'm digging the steel of Barney with Wurlitzer electric piano. Might have to get my Wurly tuned up! Who is the 2nd steel player?)
Guitare Hawaienne Authentique

Hukilau Hulas has always been a favorite of mine. I guess because it comes with "Hula Instructions Inside".
I also really like Music of Old Hawaii by the Sons of Hawaii.

I also got a Poss Miyazaki record which I dig, too, "Hawaiian Exotics." It's fun, almost in the way that Billy Mure LPs are.

Cool thread. I gotta check out Soft Hawaiian Guitars. I've been doing a bunch of Hawaiian tunes recently with a great Wurli player here in Philly. It works real well with the genre.

Putting the historical stuff aside (Ho'opi'i, McIntire, Iona, Guptil, etc) ...

A little easy listening but nice steel work from Barney & uke from Ohta-San

http://www.amazon.com/New-Hawaiian-Band-Hawaiis-Greatest/dp/B000002PCJ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1370971494&sr=8-2&keywords=new+hawaiian+band

A consistently good series ....

http://www.mele.com/music/artist/bobby+ingano/hawaiian+steel+vol+2/

Haven't heard this one but Duke is a great player. Live, he's a real swinger. On recordings, he's more melodic and sedate.

http://www.mele.com/music/artist/duke+ching/hawaiian+steel+vol+5/

My favorite Byrd recording of Hawaiian music. (LPs available still and it looks like you can still get the Japanese CD reissue. This is the stuff he recorded originally for a folio of 78s in the early 1950s. It's been repackaged several times. His classic Bakelite tone was at it's moaning best on these sides.

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UICY-93138

Also the Barney Isaacs + George Ku CD on Dancing Kat is very nice. Barney plays C6th on a Dobro. They should have just let him play his Fender. I've stolen a few licks from this one.

Sample here .... http://www.pandora.com/barney-isaacs-george-kuo/hawaiian-touch/medley-old-plantation-kuu-pua-i-paoakalani

The LP "Sonny" by Sonny Chillingwoth.

It's different from the CD "Sonny" by Sonny Chillingworth.

The LP has David Kelii on steel. The CD doesn't.

I also love all the old "Sons of Hawai'i" LPs because they have my favorite Feet Rogers on them.

But since I have between 7 to 800 Hawaiian LPs it's a little hard to narrow it down that much.

Alan Akaka, Jerry Byrd & Barney Issacs play as a steel trio. This was originally released only on cassette in the early 90s.

Some excellent choices, Jeff. I haven't heard the Mahi Beamer, but I see I can purchase it online, which I will do.

I like the Lena Machado CD very much. There are even a few cuts with Sol Hoopii, if I recall correctly.

#5 is exceptional - one of my all-time favorites. Thanks for the reminder, Jeff. Feets Rogers was such a beautiful, subtle steel player.

I really dig the little I've heard of Gabby's steel playing--I wish I knew more. Bill Wynne said the holy grail of Gabby's steel playing is on "A Leis of Songs From Sam", but I've only heard 2 cuts from that (exquisite playing, though!).

There is a Sunday Manoa Album called "Cracked Seed" on which Gabby plays steel on a couple of cuts.

Also on Ry Cooder's "Chicken Skin Music" he plays steel on a couple of cuts as well.

The Chicken Skin Music LP was very influential on me. I learned all Gabby's stuff note-for-note.

Resurrecting an ancient thread I just stumbled across! Lots of great suggestions in here and not a few I haven't listened to yet...

My list:
Hawaiian Village Serenaders - Tapa Room Tapes (not a proper album but just about the biggest influence on me as a player)
Alfred Apaka - My Isle of Golden Dreams (Jules Ah See on -pedal- steel)
Alfred Apaka - Hawaiian Favorites (Danny Stewart on steel)
Alfred Apaka - Lost Recordings of Hawaii's Golden Voice (many various folks on steel from the early years)
Alfred Apaka - The Golden Voice of the Islands (live, Webley Edwards / Hawaii Calls)
Hawaii Calls - Hawaiian Shores
Hawaii Calls - Hawaiian Strings
Hawaii Calls - Waikiki!
Benny Kalama - Echoes of Hawaii (mid era Jules at his best)
Jack de Mello - Steel Guitar Magic (Billy Hew Len and Barney Isaacs duets, a study in contrast)
Andy Iona - Aloha Hawaii (set of 78s)
Basil Henriques' Waikiki Islanders - Live at the Castaways

Special mention for Gabby Pahinui with the Sons of Hawaii (1960)...I don't have the whole album, but "Lei No Ka'iulani", that one hits hard and I can't pick up an 'ukulele without playing it.
