Gary, I just listened to some of your swing-style dobro and I think it's great Exclamation I try to get that sound by tuning my low D up to E. Is that what you do?

Hey Gary, I remember you from the "old days" in Southern California when you were working with Danny Michaels and the Rebel Playboys. I was playing in the houseband at the Swizzle Stik in Huntington Beach and you guys did the Monday night slot. I used to sneak in and watch you play but never introduced myself to you as I was too intimidated by how good you played. I think you were playing an MSA steel then.... Thinking back, I wish I'd have known you back then as you were the hottest picker I'd ever heard. If I remember right, one night you guys played "Alabama Jubilee" and I'd never heard anyone play so fast and clean at the same time in my life... I'm glad you're still playing and having a great career as you deserve it........ JH in Va.

Resophonic Rodeo is on my "alltime" playlist. Would love to see some tabs of that material if anybody was up for it!

Hey Jerry. Thank you for the incredibly nice compliments. Those days playing with Danny Michaels were amazing! When I joined Danny I could barely even tune the C6 neck, let alone play it. Thanks to Danny's patience I was able to earn while I learned. Being a single man and in my early 20's, I had plenty of time to woodshed during the day and that's exactly what I did for three whole glorious years! Since I only had one steel I would pack it up every night (we played six nights a week) and take it home and practice on the C6 neck pretty much the entire day until it was time to drive back down to Long Beach and do it all again at George's Round Up. What an incredible era that was. Live music was alive and well and musicians could actually earn a living playing clubs. I wouldn't take anything for it. Thanks again Jerry!!!

Hi Ray. I actually ended up having Paul Beard build me a seven-string resonator guitar which has the fourth string tuned to E. It's basically a standard G dobro tuning with an E string located in the middle between the two triads. I also tune the fourth string up to F when I want a G7th tuning. Having the E in the middle allows me not only to play western swing but it also lets me play full minor chords which comes in very handy......

You're a funny man Gary Brandin! Glad to see you STILL have a full head of hair. By the way, I used to love sneaking in to watch you play with your band GARY BRANDIN and the BRANDIN' IRONS. I seem to recall you had the house gig at The Bunkhouse......

Geez Gary....now I feel bad. I was just kidding back with you! Are you still involved with the sponge bob soundtrack? I was thinking recently about how we met during the country rock era in southern California. You were playing steel with The Phantom Herd at Isadore's and I was playing with Lost Angeles at Cafe Metro in Newport Beach. Those were amazing times my friend. Hope all is well in your world.....
