Another topic piqued my interest, so I made a spreadsheet to analyze it. The SGHOF web page lists each inductee's birth date. I used the birth year and the induction year to calculate their age at induction. In the case of posthumous inductions, I used the year of their death to calculate their age.

The results are interesting. The awards have been going on for 33 years, so you can divide it into three 11 year segments to see the trends. There are reasons, of course, including the fact that people live longer today. Anyway, here's what I learned:
Code:
     Ages of SGHOF Inductees
years       average     youngest       oldest
1978-1988   56.3        44 (Emmons)    74 (Alkire)
1989-1999   60.8        48 (Jernigan)  77 (Tavares)
2000-2010   69.0        46 (Franklin)  88 (Turchetti)

all         62.9        44 (Emmons)    88 (Turchetti)

The trends are pretty clear. In the first group, only 4 of the inductees were over 60. In the third group, only 4 were under 60.

Ages of the inductors would follow a similar trend.
