I restored a Fender 400 it was disassembled when I bought it. I had the original pickup re-wound the magnets are different legnths graduated from short to long, I installed it with the long lengths to the heavier strings but I am not happy with the high end. I figured I'd ask if anyone knew the proper attitude for this pickup before I switch it. I have been playing out with it and I do enjoy the idiosycracies and I do get a great sound overall.

On my 1000 the long magnets are on the bass strings, and under the pickup small clearance holes are drilled for the magnets on the bass side. So, I think you got it right!
