Fellow Forumites, I have heard that Christchurch, New Zealand has gotten clobbered again by another earthquake...has anyone heard from Paddy Long or Ivan Posa, or any of the other steelers in that area? Let's all say a prayer for them and hope all's OK.

I had a chat with Paddy last night and he said that it had been relatively quiet as far as seismic activity. Obviously a calm before another storm. I have just talked with Paddy again, and there has been considerable damage. His house seems reasonably ok but all his concrete paths around his house are badly damaged, and some of his ceiling has fallen out. Christchurch Cathedral has been very badly damaged and several other inner city office buildings have collapsed. Paddy is fine and his Zums are safe. I am in the centre of the North Island and fortunately, we are completely unaffected by these Quakes. I am sure Paddy will post here as soon as he can. Thanks to everyone for their concern and best wishes.

Paddy is definitely OK. It has just been announced 65 are dead so far and there will be more. This earthquake is far worse than the first one.

I have just been watching the news on TV and this has been a devastating disaster. Unlike the previous Quake back in September, this one was a lesser magnitude of 6.3 but what has made it so destructive was that it was very shallow at only 5 kilometers below the surface. Also this one was extremely violent. There are still many people trapped in the wreckage. The authorities expect more loss of life than the 65 confirmed so far. This tragedy is so very sad and tragic for all of us here in New Zealand.

I have only just heard of this by reading the Forum this morning and My immediate thoughts were for Paddy and Ivan who have become very good friends of ours over the years.
I am happy to hear that both these Gents ar Ok but at the same time I am saddened to read of the less fortunate people who have lost loved ones in this terrible ocurrance.

I'm glad to hear our NZ friends are physically OK, although it does appear that Paddy has some home damage.

Thank you everyone for your concerns and support. This has been a devastating disaster for the people of Christchurch which has deeply affected the whole country. There are still many live people and bodies buried in the wreckage and much Search and Rescue help has arrived from all over the world. The whole focus at the moment is on search and recovery. Paddy is fine but his house has been damaged somewhat. Thanks to everyone for their messages of concern and support and I will post updates as news becomes available.

Glad to hear all is well as can be expected. Prayers are with you guys in NZ and still hope we can see Paddy and you Ivan at Brisbane festival. One of our steel players from Brisbane - Des Anthony ( Luthier) was wiped out in the Brisbane floods. I think his family got out as did his Mullins, but thats it.

All the best
Jeff

Greetings to all. Firstly thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. Christchurch is in a terrible state, I am fairly new to the forum, and live in Christchurch. We are pretty fortunate where we are, but many places we have always known and grown up seeing are changed quite dramatically. I was glad to hear Paddy was O.K. when I heard from him yesterday too, and hoping Sandy Inglis is ok also, as he lives somewhere near Redcliffs, in the Sumner area as far as I know?

Dave, Glenn Campbell lives in Auckland which is well away from the disaster area. So far there are 105 dead and there are still 228 missing. Damage is being estimated at 12 billion dollars. The main CBD area of Christchurch will be almost unusable because the ground has basically liquified. Many people are leaving the city for good as they see no future there. Unfortunately I dont think this is the last earthquake we will experience in this area.

Hi guys .. this is the first chance I have had to pop on to the forum .. firstly many thanks for all your concerns and well wishes, my beloved city has taken a bit of a hammering unfortunately and there has been terrible loss of life.
My family is fine and I am currently staying with one of my sisters about 40 kms north of the city - while most of you will be seeing scenes of total destruction - large swathes of the city are totally untouched, seems the quake was centred at Lyttelton which is the port of Christchurch, and radiated out to the Central Business District and the eastern beachside suburbs - which is where I live. a fair amount of the damage in the suburbs is to roads and sewerage and water supplies and of course power... I still have no power at my house, or water but the house has minimal damage, my driveway and concrete paths etc are a total mess though ! My Zums are untouched and with me out of town.!

Sadly I have to deal with the loss of a very close friend and fellow Muso Murray Wood who was the CEO and part owner of Canterbury TV - the regional TV station whose 6 story building just pancaked into about a 5 metre pile of rubble. Murray and I worked a lot of Television in the 80's and 90's and still work together a lot on sessions etc - he was a stunning keyboard player, singer and composer and treasured best mate. They think there is about 120 bodies still in the rubble of this building so you can imagine how that has impacted on people.
Current toll is 123 dead with about 220 still missing.
We are very grateful for the influx of specialist rescue teams from Aussie, USA, UK, Japan, China and Taiwan -- it's been unbelievable.

It's still early days but we are a resilient lot and everyone is looking out for each other - we will bounce back - it's just going to take a while, so once again thank you so much for your prayers and best wishes - it means a lot to me to know you have us in your thoughts.
