Hey-all,

I've had a great steel('79 Sho-Bud 3/4) for a long time with hardly any idea how to use it. Does anyone know of any instruction in the Pac NW? I'm 15 minutes from the Canandian boarder in Bellingham, WA. Not much of a country scene up here.

Kevin, there's a good teacher in Mount Vernon named Thom Gustafson. Here's a link to his website:

Northwest School of Guitar

I took a few lessons from him when I was first starting out with pedal steel and was very satisfied. Because of the ferry schedule from Lopez Island where I live, it wasn't practical for me to take more than a few lessons. (It took almost 9 hours for me to travel to a 1-hour lesson and back each time.) But he got me off to a good start, and I would have stuck with him if it had been at all practical.

You can also try Dave Harmonson. He's here on the forum, lives in seattle but might be willing to make the trek north. He is a great guy and a great player.

I have to agree about Dave Harmonson (aka Country Dave). You might want to keep an eye on his schedule and see if you can arrange a lesson next time he's up north. He gigs a lot all over the state, both solo and with various bands. If you like classic country music with a lot of tasty pedal steel, go see him with Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers. You will not be disappointed!

I don't know him personally, but possibly the closest to B'ham might be John Ummel.

Kevin,
Just played in Bellingham last Saturday with Zoe at The Green Frog. Thommy G. and John Ummel are both good guys to hook up with and can help you get going.
I do some teaching when I can fit it in, but 90 miles is a bit of a drive for a couple of licks.
