Hello to all Forum steelies, my name is Phil Baker Iam a Queensland steel player from Australia.
Iam asking for anybody who may have a photo or clip of one of the worlds finest players Tommy White playing his black emmons p/p on the Opry?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

It's not the Opry, but you can see Tommy playing a black '76 p/p on his "Hot Licks And Cool Tips" DVD. After changing hands a couple times I now have that guitar. It has forgotten everything Tommy ever played on it. |

Yeah, I couldn't find any of his licks on that guitar either when I owned it. That's why I sold it. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

For the record:
My copy of Tommy's E9 video shows a still from the actual film, and he's sitting at the black Emmons pp in that very distinctive spotty-looking shirt!
There's not a Carter to be seen anywhere. _________________ Roger Rettig - Emmons D10s, Quilter TT-12, B-bender Teles and old Martins.

Again, not the Opry, but here's a clip from the DVD. I strongly suggest getting a copy for a truly inspiring/depressing experience. Bob has them for sale.

Heaven help us - isn't Tommy THE most musically gifted steel-player on the planet???
Well, that's subjective, of course but, speaking for myself, I could listen to that stuff all day long.
Bless you TW - you're a treasure! Thanks for all the work you must have put in to be able to captivate us with your playing.
Back to the drawing board for me!!!!!! _________________ Roger Rettig - Emmons D10s, Quilter TT-12, B-bender Teles and old Martins.

Back in Fall 1999 Tommy White sold his 1976 D-10 Emmons right here in the Forum. That is the dvd guitar.
Three weeks later, he sold on the Forum his Opry Stage Emmons -- his 1982 D-10. I bought the latter. I never should have sold it, but I got that old red belly fever.
Tommy explained that the 1982 was his Opry guitar. Frankly, I never believed it was an '82 because it had the 1970s pedals, but I don't know much about later Emmons guitars. I think its serial number was 6xxxD.
Tommy was just starting a promotional relationship with Derby I think at the time so obviously could not use the Emmons on stage or TV anymore. _________________ Chris Lucker

Aha! Mine has a completely different cover - it's as I described, and is a 'still' from the actual tape.
Sorry - I scanned it at an angle!!!!

Roger, methinks this is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma …..
Maybe if Tommy ever sees this he will explain. |

Yes! Jim Cohen is correct. As I recall the "Cool Tips" vid changed publishers some years back and was repackaged with a newer picture, obviously a Carter guitar on the cover of the later. However, the vid was done with that great sounding benchmark Emmons push-pull guitar. One of my favorite pedal steel guitar tones still today.
Funny, that video is very difficult for me to listen to now because of tuning issues and missed notes, as well as some life changing challenges I was experiencing at the time. Seems we were also under time restrictions, which again, made it difficult for me to focus. I really appreciate those who purchased the video. Even with the problems, I still feel it was a significant and informative piece of work.
Phil,
To address your original post, I have no personal photos of either Emmons push-pull guitars that I know of. Wish I did. If some are to surface, I'll get them directly to you.
Roger,
Thank you so much!
My best,
TW |

Oh , one more thing. You can tell by my choice of fashion or lack of in shirts, I must have been experiencing some sort of crisis. |
