Wayne Moss just called with some very sad news....Nashville has lost another great guitarist, Barry Chance....Barry worked with the Barefoot Jerry Band for many years and played on many of the albums...also for the Charlie McCoy Band as well as playing several years for Jimmy Buffet and the Coral Reefer Band. Barry was a great player; he had a wonderful feel for any style of music he played; being Lightning Chances' son, he was 'raised in it' and I enjoyed very much working with him on records and on the road....he will be missed.

I had the pleasure of knowing Barry and playing a gig or two with him. His son Jayson and I have worked together for years in local/regional bands around Atlanta then on the Gretchen Wilson tour. Jayson, like his dad has played with many great country artists. Barry's great talent was passed on to Jayson and Barry will no doubt live on through him. Rest in peace Barry. _________________ Gaylon's Homepage

Russ, this is terrible news. We done a couple of marathon tours back in the '80's with Shelly West and David Frizzell. Barry was working with Shelly at the time. He and I just hit it off from day one. we hung together the whole time we were on the road. He was a great player, and had a great sense of humor. He will be sadly missed. _________________ Bob Hempker |

Was Barry Chance at one time the entire Coral Reefer Band--say around 1974? Jimmy Buffett (virtually unheard-of, other than "Come Monday" making a minor splash a year earlier) and a lone guitarist were down the bill (B W Stevenson headlined) but nonetheless stole the Watermelon Feed Somethinsomethin Festival held near Norman OK. August of whichever year, 1973 or 1974. Many instant fans-for-life were made that day long before the Parrothead name or phenomenon existed. _________________ "Gopher, Everett?" |

I was never much of a Buffet fan until I heard Barry on Buffet's live "You had to be there" album- absolutely smoking compressed hot lead guitar.
I realized I'd loved him on the Barefoot Jerry stuff. A really great player. I agree with Gaylon, a large dollop of that talent lives on with his son Jayson. He'll be sorely missed. |

I just ran across this thread while researching Barry. I recently bought one of his old amps and much like MVA, I wasn't much of a Buffett fan until I heard that same album. I'm wondering if he used the Music Man amp that I now own on that album. It's a very compressed sounding amp. I hate to hear of his passing . He was one of my favorites. |
