MIKE SWEENEY is NOT stranded in the UK

Post by b0b »

Someone apparently hacked Mike Sweeney's Yahoo account. This is a common scam. Here's the email that I received this morning:

Code: Select all

Hope you got my message on time, I need your assistance urgently. I could barely think straight at this point. I had a trip here in United Kingdom on a mission. I am presently in Sheffield and I am having some difficulties. I misplaced my bag on my way to the hotel where other valuable things were kept along with my passport. I feel so ashamed because i am so stranded and idle. I will like you to help me with a loan of $1500 to pay my hotel bills and also return back home. I will refund the money to you as soon as I get back, I have spoken to the embassy here but they are not responding to the matter effectively I currently have limited access to emails for now.

Best regards

Mike

those morons are getting more and more sofisticated, I guess the best thing is to call person on the phone..I`m sure there is people on this forum who will send the money to help fellow player in distress..this is a very low hit...but this is the world we live in today and I`m affraid it ain`t going to get any better any time soon...

they are not getting any more sophisticated when we can instantly identify them by their bad language and spelling mistakes.

The good thing is that if Mike had genuinely been coming to England or the UK, we would have known about it in advance I'm sure.

This operator is probably in some African or far East country, and it is a despicable act.

At first I was concerned that it might be a legit e-mail because the sender said "James Sweeney" but it was signed "Mike" and I doubt if most people outside the steel guitar community know that he goes by "Mike". Also, we all know that Mike would not be in England on vacation unless he was with a band playing, and not by himself.

Those SOB's that hack computers and send out viruses should face the death penalty.... NO EXCEPTIONS!

There are enough members in Britain who would be only too glad to welcome a fellow steeler. If anyone ever gets stuck over there just access the Forum and relate your problem and I'm sure that within an hour or two you'll have a plethora of offers to put you up and help. :D

First, I want to say a big "THANK YOU" to b0b for posting this so quick. This is the first time I've had to deal with something like this and I'm in agreement with Roger Hurst regarding the punishment for people who try to rip people off doing things like this. We do know this came out of Nigeria. I know things are bad there but that's no excuse to use a ploy like this to get money from people. My Yahoo account has been closed so there should be no more emails. If you would like me to have your email address just send me an email through the Forum and I will add you to my address book and send you my new email address. I sincerely hope no one followed through with this scam. If I do get overseas again I will be sure to post it here so all the members will know about it before I go!

Thanks again to all of you,

Mike

Roger,

Had I been stranded anywhere I would have called you and asked if you had another $5.00 '64 Fairlane so I'd have a ride. :D At least Mike Baker would have.....

I haven't laughed so hard. Do you think that Ford would have gotten you out of the Jungle. For 5 bucks, it's worth a try. I bet there was a weed eater in the trunk.
