A friend of Mike Auldridge took a video of Mike at the Beard shop, checking his guitars for approval. There's also a brief walk through parts of the shop.

Thanks for the link, Howard.

The MA guitars are incredibly consistent.
I recently tried one that was 50 serial numbers earlier than mine (both are double digits). I couldn't tell them apart.

Does Mike ever dislike one, and do a "Pete Townsend"? Smile

I'm looking forward to seeing you in June when I'm in the area. I'll be bringing in my MAS for it's "250,000 Lick Check Up".

Nah....I have heard him say "this one is not quite there..." It'll get tweaked until it is correct.

Both Mike and Jerry Douglas are hands on guys and are fully vested in their signature guitars. Nothing leaves the shop without them playing and approving.

Very cool, in every sense. The fact that he checks EVERY one with his name on it is amazing, and that you know that when you order one, the namesake has actually played and approved it before you get it. Definitely takes any worries out of ordering 'through the mail' as it were.

Smile

How cool is that?

Thanks for posting that.

I tell people that the guitar has Mike's DNA all over it. I know of cases where the "original" strings get saved for posterity.

That's very cool, Howard. Thanks for sharing! I agree, it would have been funny to see MIke say something like "This is a piece of %*#@!!!" and smash one. Smile

But I doubt he'd be the kind of guy to do that, anyway.

It's amazing what he sees/hears/feels.

Mike uses D'Addario EJ42's and once we accidentally substituted a .017 for the high D .016.

He knew something was not quite right! We figured it it out with a micrometer.

I got to hang with Mike in St Louis the first year that model was introduced. I must admit it was one of the better toned, wood resonators I've ever played. If I were in the market for a new one I'd buy that one.

It was great to meet him after so many years. He had been my silent mentor so to speak. Found his Takoma record in a radio station - never had been played - I played it (at home). I have to credit him (and Duanne Alllman) with getting me started playing various slide guitars.

He and I, and Cindy Cashdollar, put on a little performance at the Beard booth at that convention. Drew lotso people. A highlight for me for sure.

As an aside that may be interesting to some of y'all. I have recently come back to playing a resonator guitar. And I have begun to have just a hint of the same kind of shoulder trouble that John Ely suffered with for so long. So I've been paying more attention to my shoulder movement in hopes of heading off a real problem. I also need to get to John's site to see what else I can learn. In watching Mr. Auldridge I noticed that his shoulders were comletely relaxed and NEVER moved at all. And his elbows rarely left his sides. My Tai Chi teacher would strongly approve. Playing position is very important. No doubt about it.

I have a Mike Auldridge model Beard that spent some time on the road with Jerry Douglas, so I guess I have the best of both!

It's an amazing instrument and records incredibly well. I recently did a couple sessions with Stone Gossard (of Pearl Jam fame), and was asked to bring a pedal steel. Well, I brought the dobro as well, and as soon as he heard the Beard, Stone said *That's what I want!*
