I am looking to buy a Recorder and would like some opinions from Forum members here. Comparisions, etc. according to your experiences.
I have been looking at the Boss BR600 at $349. and the Fostex MR -8mkII 8 track Digital Recorder, at $199.00. They both have Flash cards and builtin Mic's. They both upload to computer for CD burning. I will just use it for home uses and the 2 track simultaneous recording is all I need for backukp and steel.
I would appreciate hearing from you...thanks...al.

There are so many Recorders out now, that it is hard to pick out the right one for the best price. Hard disc? Cd burners, Flash card?/...Thanks...al

Well Al, a hard disk recorder vs a Flash memory recorder has unique differences. The Hard Drive is always spinning..the flash Drive ( smart Drive ) is not.
Pick the one with good features, an SD card, two track recording , built in mics, a display you can actually see, USB upload or download, and be done with it.
Boss records in a priority file format, Fostex I believe records in WAVE, which is a common format.
I believe either of the two recorders you mentioned will serve you very well.

Tony-Thanks for posting. It looks like you have mentioned all the important features that is needed for simple recording. I have been thinking Boss,Fostex or Tascam.
You mentioned the Fostex was in Wave format and the Boss not. The wave format sounds more logical to me. Is that right? Thanks again, I appreciate it. ..al.

| If you go over to Harmony Central and read the user reviews, it seems like the Tascam is the most user friendly. They are known for having controls like on the old analogue recorders rather than have everything on a tiny screen with menues. If you will be plugging it into your computer, you probably don't need one that burns CDs, because the computer can do that. |

Al, the only real consideration for the file format is when you are ready to burn to a CD. I believe that even the BOSS BR600 converts the final files to WAVE when they are transferred to the PC.
Just keep in mind that ALL of these gadgets are little PC's and they will have some learning issues . What may seem easy for me may not be easy to someone else and vice versa. The trick for all of these manufacturers is to hire someone who can write manuals with words the average Joe can understand.
Some of these units use little knobs vs a jog wheel to make changes, it's not difficult, just different.
personally I wouldn't spend more than what the BR600 is being sold for, that is a fine price for a great little unit loaded with tons of stuff.
IF you are even half PC savy you will be fine with any of them.
go for it I say..

Tony, David, Brian- Thanks for all the good suggestions . I have decided to go with the new BR600 at $349. or the Fostex at $199. I have been in touch with Bob Martin and he even suggested that.
I am sure with all the good things said about the Boss, it is no doubt much better than the Fostex, I guess you get what you paid for. I will post when I get it and record with it. Thanks again, Guys...al.
