I'm the host of the SGF birthday page:

http://www.rahul.net/thinker/forumbirthdays.html

It came to my attention recently that the page may be a source of info for spam (etc) harvesters. Do you suppose so? Should I reel the page in?

I had forgotten where it was until you posted. Is there a need for it? Please remove my date from it, yesterday.
Thanks, Ron

Ron,

Done.

No, there is no need for it, but there was a strong interest in having such a thing some years back. See here:

I'm not sure that most of the forum members actually know of its existence.

I haven't received birthday wishes for the past couple of years, but then again, it maybe that I'm "Persona non Grata" because of my vitriolic pen !!

Other than that, I think it's a valuable reference source.

KEEP IT, but publicize it a little more.
IMHO
Basil

I had never heard of it. Embarassed My birthday is November 12. Please add me to the list and tell Forum members I shall be happy to receive gifts and congratulations. Laughing

Without the year and Social Security Number, I don't think the day of the year would be much use to spammers. I don't mind people knowing that I was born in 1986.... Wink

Alan , I didn't know you're dyslexic when it come to writing your year of birth. Can I please correct it for you ?
Instead of 1986, I do know that you meant to say 1896 !!

I don't see any email addresses. It's no more a source for spam info than any other list of links.

b0b,

I agree. There are web page links on the birthday page (no email IDs), but those are links to open sites that folks want to advertise. However, there are some people who don't even want their full names out there online these days, it seems. Trepidation has arisen. So I'll gladly remove anyone's name if they make such a request of me.

I noticed Tommy Dodd was born March 7th and 14th.

He's a big guy, but c'mon..... Smile

I haven't had any spam problems due to your site.

My link has to be updated to

I agree that b0b has fixed the email harvesting issue.

IMO, the potential danger is from criminals trolling for personal info for identity theft, not spammers. If they know your birth date, mother's maiden name (which is commonly used as a secondary identity check), where you went to school, where you work, and are somehow able to get a SSN, they can pretty much assume your identity, start applying for credit cards, and so on. It's no joke, and happens a lot, especially now that so much is done online now.

I saw the birthday page a long time ago, but I just don't want my birthday made public for these reasons. Call me paranoid, but I think it's potentially fraught with problems, even though I agree it's a nice concept for the community.

Same here. I never submitted my info, and I don't think it's a good idea to do so. Just my opinion.

I have no problem with a birthday page. I know where to go in case I forget my own.
