I'm pretty much a Hawaiian and swing music kinda guy. But as I sifted through some of my "lesser played" albums, I came across an Allman Bros. greatest hits record. It reminded me that one of my all-time favorite post-1964 tunes (and there aren't many, maybe 3) is "Jessica".

Just curious, do any of you play or perform this number on the steel?

Jeff, I'm pretty much in the same boat with you on the Hawaiian and swing stuff, but that is a great tune. Those Greg Allman/Dicky Betts double leads are so classic.

I wonder if my trio could pull this off with steel, upright bass and ukulele? Hmmmmm... probably not.

Jessica is a very melodic, very easy tune to play on the guitar. It follows the shape of a D chord (open string chord). I think it's in the key of G though.

I was living in Las Vegas in the 80's and we played this in one of the bands I was in at Sam's Town. The guitarist and I twinned and I remember we worked pretty hard on it. Crowd pleaser!

Gerald - actually, I recall it being in A, but I could be wrong about that. It's been too long...

Most folks do know it and recognize it, that's for sure.

I thought it was done in A. If I remember right it is guitar ond organ in harmony, and tricky to figure out the parts.

It is done in A and the original was by Duane Allman and Dicky Betts and not Greg, he was the keyboard player with the Allmans. I used to do the song on guitar with a steel player I was working with and later learned it on steel. It's a great tune to end with one of those Allman Brothers extended jams just going back and forth from the I to the IV until you finally get tired and end the thing....JH in Va.

"Jessica" was recorded and released in 1973, two years after Duane Allman died ... although did the band perform it live before recording it?

I believe Les Dudek and Tommy Talton shared the guitar duties with Dickey Betts on the "Brothers and Sisters" album. If anything, "Jessica" was one of the first tracks to feature Dickey trading "leads" with Chuck Leavell on piano.
