I think this would be a nice annual fundraising item for the Forum. Each year, gather up 40-50 submissions from the Members and sell the disc for $10.

Great idea Jim and of course, don't forget the Tracks might also be another source to compliment the CD. Down the road, possibly the "Best of the Forum Pickers, Vol I", etc., etc... :)
p.s. Looking forward to the first CD with some great steel!

It's an awesome idea and one that requires lots of administration on b0bs end. I guess I should try to finish at least one song in the can and send it to b0b before he starts volume II !

b0b, would you like to use my "Hangliding" tune from Northern Steelers II that's in your CD collection of CD's for sale? I could submit the permission form.

I need to find my open copy, John. My personal CD library is not organized well - I have CDs at various places at home and in the office. I'm also searching for Jack Stoner's "Grande Tour" CD, and a newly released Doug Jayne CD that I played on (different project).

I think they're hiding in the same place as the socks that escaped from the dryer. ;-)

I have a system for the submissions that are arriving in the mail. I'm adding liner notes into the master file as they come in (it's looking good), and each submission form with its CD is going into a big box. I'll rip them in order. I don't want these to get mixed up with all of the other CDs at Forum Central.

Also, I just ordered a CD duplicator from Musicians Friend. Gearing up.

This project has inspired me to get my recording gear connected up. I moved all my "stuff" to a new location nearly a year ago and procrastinated about getting it hooked up. Well, last weekend I connected it all up and it works, so I have no excuses any more for not producing something. :D

I'm going to submit something I recorded, but did not write. Is that OK? (It's in public domain, so there are no copyright/royalty issues.)

Everybody wants to bend the rules. :\

At first I thought public domain would be okay, but then I had visions of 20 different versions of "Londonderry Aire" (Danny Boy) and reconsidered.

No, public domain compositions are not accepted. We can do another CD someday for that. This CD showcases our members' creativity in songwriting as well as their steel playing. A familiar melody in the middle of it would compromise the listening experience.

FWIW, I've been listening to the tracks submitted so far on random play and it sounds really good. Everybody has a different style.

I think "Bama Charlie" signs off with 'DYBGD' - he said what it meant awhile back, but I'll be hogtied if I can remember now. :\

Forum member Charles Davidson writes DYKBC which he says means "Do You Know Bama Charlie". Maybe that's what you're thinking about. Nobody else uses that acronym.

Well, yeah, sorta . . .

I took original to include original arrangement of traditional material. I mailed my CD to b0b last week before the above discussion of Public Domain started. Although the tune is based on the traditional one, it strays quite a bit from it. You can hear it here:

http://picosong.com/Yst/

I tried to drum up some interest in this one last month without much success:

American Primitive PSG

You can give it a listen and decide for yourself if it's original enough or not. However, as far as the Showcase CD is concerned, I figure that b0b has the final call for inclusion or not. Obviously, I'd like to see it included or I wouldn't have submitted it in the first place. It certainly is NOT another attempt at a I-vi-IV-V progression or a 12-bar shuffle and, I am sure, it is as original as anything that will be submitted.

Yes, the CD will be for sale to Forum members.

Michael's submission was mailed before our discussion about public domain songs clarified the issue. Besides, it sounds original to me. If he hadn't titled it "Shady Grove", I'm not sure I would have recognized it. It's a very original arrangement. The song is in.

I don't have any problem with folk songs being included. I just wanted to clarify the issue, and I'm looking forward to hearing Michael's arrangement. I was thinking of recording a mediaeval lute tune on lap steel, which is obviously in the public domain. I even thought of combining steel and mediaeval instruments.

I can see why b0b wouldn't want a dozen arrangements of Old Joe Clark, though. :D

The four day holiday will hopefully give me time to come up with something. Unfortunately the temperature here in Northern California has dropped over the last few days to freezing, so I'm going to have to overcome the frosty fingers problem in my den in the sub-basement. :whoa:
