Interesting, Basil.
Not quite the era we're talking about, but I'm sure you've had occasion to play through one of this British gent's amps or echo effects at one time or other in the past...

Charlie´s company, Watkins Electric Music (WEM), starting in the early 1950s, eventually manufactured and ran P.A. for the Beatles, Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Fleetwood Mac, Cream, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and countless others.
His equipment and sound is captured on rock movies such as Pink Floyd's Live in Pompeii, the Stones in Hyde Park and Live at the Isle of Wight where Jimi Hendrix played one of his last big shows.
His Dominator amps and Copicat tape echo units were standard fare in the 60´s and 70´s, and initially, he was the only one either side of the Atlantic (with the possible exception of Bob Heil of Heil Sound here in Illinois) who knew how to bring sound to the massive crowds of the time.
The only other alternative was the primitive "foghorn style" public address systems prevalent in the stadiums of the time in the USA and Europe which were obviously not designed for the reproduction of live music.
These days Charlie is involved in accordion tuning and midi.
I speak to him occasionally (he's a Peterson customer), and his stories are fascinating. You can read about his achievements on his website http://www.wemwatkins.co.uk/history.htm
Another unsung hero who never quite got his due...
Rupert Neve & Joe Meek likewise in the recording industry.
To quote Charlie; "The rest is everybody else's history."

We had numerous requests to display this unique historic instrument at the world's biggest steel guitar show in St. Louis, and happily Paul Warnik consented.

We carefully loaded the Grand Letar in one of our vehicles. Peterson's chief technician and restorer of the Grand letar, Susan Haslam, was at hand to service the instrument throughout the show.
Then we headed to St. Louis, Missouri, to show the National Grand Letar exactly 70 years after its last showing in New York in 1938, this time at the 2008 International Steel Guitar Convention.

The steel guitar community recognized this instrument as being unique and Letritia Kandle's contribution to steel guitar as being akin to the missing link in the guitar's historical progression.
She basically invented the console steel guitar before Gibson, Fender, Rickenbacker or anyone else saw the light.

We had many guests at the Peterson booth, among them was Dusty Nall, who played with the Louvin Brothers, Ernest Tubb, Slim Whitman and many more...

We think Letritia would have been proud!

On a sad note, Carl Dixon's wife Hazel passed away shortly after their visit with Letritia Kandle, we offer our sincere condolences to Carl and his family.

AFTER 60 yrs!!!

Post by C Dixon »

Needless to say, this is very difficult. But out of respect for Letritia and my wife, and the many requests, I offer these photos of events that align with this thread's unprecedented history.

Image

Letritia and I.

She was so enthralled with how the PSG had developed and improved, she got down and and asked many questions. Never have I ever seen anyone so intriqued by a musical instrument. Her "awes" and "wows" still ring in my ears. She wanted to know everything. Right down to the lever that holds the E's to Eb. She could not believe how the Multi Kord she had received from the Harlin Bros in '47 had improved.

I then took her on a condensed musical journey of how the "chording" type of PSG evolved to a "moving tone" type of PSG. She latched on to EVERY word. And continued to exclaim repeated euphamisms in awe.

When I turned the guitar upside down, she was thrilled and tried to obsorb as much as she could. Bless her heart.

She turned to her 90 yr old (and very feeble husband Walter) and said, "I can't believe I was a part of this!" And that thilled her to no end.

This picture was taken in her living room. And it was almost 60 yrs to the day since I last laid eyes on her as a 17 yr old boy in the late '40's.

Words cannot describe the moment she greeted us at the door of her home on Wednesday afternoon August 27. She will be 93 in November. And she is still JUST as bright, gracious and inwardly beautiful as I remember her during my weekly lessons on the Hawaiian guitar in '46, '47 and '48.

Image

Hazel and I.

Letritia took this photo. Pretty good huh, for a 92 yr old lady.

After this picture was taken, Walter and Letritia took us out to dinner in our car (since neither of them can drive). It was here where Hazel said, "I am not feeling well".

The next morning I had to rush her to the hospital where she had a massive stroke and later passed away on August 31st. We met in August of 1947 (she was 14, I was 15) and were married on August 25th of 1951. Knew her for 61 yrs of which she was my wife for 57 yrs.

Ya never know folks, it can be snatched from you in the twinkling of an eye. Get your house and hearts in order. Express your love for your loved ones, as well as others, before it is too late, because it may be gone before you realize it!

May Jesus bless Letritia and Walter. And may He rest my precious wife's soul. She was truly an angel sent from Jesus. I was blessed beyond my ability to convey. Praise His holy name.

Thank you Doc,

You are so graciously kind dear brother in Christ. As I posted recently, this is a very difficult time for me, as it is the first Christmas that Hazel is not with me in 57 yrs. That is a long time.

But Jesus provides comfort even in times of great loss. And you are one of those blessings. And I have others too. So I will not be alone (in heart) this Christmas, and it means much. I cherish all who have become a part of my life who have provided their love and support; especially at this time of year; where we celebrate the most awesome birth in the history of the universe.....................

The birth of "God in the flesh". Which resulted in the saving of 100's of millions from a death too horrible to contemplate. It is called "The second death". Which is far worse than dying of the flesh (the first death). And it is 100% free for all who wish to receive it. Praise Jesus' Holy name.

May He bless you Doc, and may He bless all of you always,

carl

Hi Basil,
According to Paul Warnik, who spoke to Letritia extensively about her career, by 1954 she had left the music business, so its unlikely that she was on the record you mention unless the recording session took place a year or two before the release.
