I think with todays political climate many folks are just sick and tired of turning on TV to watch a show, a concert or an awards show etc..just to see a performer or a presenter go off on a political diatribe..
Heck, what about the folks that actually paid big bucks for a show to only have the performer go off on a political deal...ex: L Ronstadt in Vegas..Then she complained that people were denying her right to speech..fact is..she got booed for not singing..people payed to hear her sing, not talk politics...
add to this Natalies off comment about W being from Texas...and then the press that followed.
and now , a few years later with a new CD and a song about it...
I'm thinking that for the most part folks did forget about it and move on...I know I did..
but evidently someone else didn't...
as Kevin says above..
I think it is a bad business decision to take on the cash crowd...it's not a battle than can be won...
Natalie and gang should have just moved on and do what they do best, sing and play music...

Charlie, this whole thing just popped up again due to the controversy of a song on the new CD..which is understood to be blasting everyone for the incident.
The Chicks brought it back..not the minions...
I guess if you are correct and she stated " I am ashamed.."
maybe she didn't really mean it if she now has a song blasting everyone for the incident..
The "STAGE" being referred to is not "60 minutes"..
it's the performance Stage where folks pay to buy a ticket and hear an artist or artists perform...Artists don't own that stage..they are paid to perform on it..and some are payed quite well...

Pete, I'm just telling you people's perception of Natalie. Its real and its deep. We all have our opinions, but once a performer states them on stage they are taking a chance of alienating people. I understand your position but The Chicks are apparently not giving it up. People are real sensitive in times of war. The damage has been done. Remember Lennon with his Jesus remark? Roger, if you thinks its absurd just ask the local country crowd what they think. Its real. Many of them have sons and daughters overseas. Thats reality.
[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 17 March 2006 at 03:19 PM.]

A lot of parents with sons and daughters overseas rightly blame Bush for putting them in harm's way; show me one that blames the Dixie Chicks for the risks their children are forced to take...
Yeah, I remember Lennon's Jesus remark; The Beatle's career ended overnight; they never had another hit single or sold another album and their influence ended right there; they've long since been forgotten.
Actually of course it was the right-wing "so called" preachers who largely stirred all that up who've long been forgotten...

I'm "facing reality"...??? Thanks... I'm sure you'll go back and edit your Freudian slip but it was nice of you to say...
As you did with the Lennon comment you make some of my points for me without trying, thank you.
Otherwise you missed every point I tried to make. And your sweeping statement about the "vast majority of people" is pure bull**** with no basis in fact. Yes, big corporate radio forced their stations to quit playing them, but people came to the shows by the 10's of thousands and bought millions of CDs and DVDs anyway (AFTER the controversy started.) Many people were offended and were (and are) very vocal about it, as is their right; many millions were not or even AGREED, imagine that!
They haven't released anything for 2 years since then because they chose to lay low as MANY major acts do between albums and tours...

Isn't it great that we can form an opinion and post here on the forum, I reckon we would be a little peeved if we were censored and everyone formed an opinion of our individual statements, and pretty much banned us from ever forming another opinion, it's not that I agree or disagree with what has been said by the Dixie Chicks, but I do admire the fact that they stand by what they believe right or wrong.
Each one of us on this thread has just formed an opinion of what we believe right or wrong. As a former Marine I have fought for the right for us to say (freedom of speach) what we believe without fear of retribution or to be censored by anyone. So I say, keep on keeping on and stand by your convictions. Right or wrong.

Freedom of speech way to go Natalie!!
Congrats again Pete for landing an awesome gig.
Dixie chicks, I love the tone and despise the attitude and from what I've seen with their recent record sales, I'm not nearly alone. Good luck!!

Guys and Gals, Let's not forget that Pete Finney and LLoyd Maines are real nice guys and super steel players. In my 62 years of playing, I played whatever music I was hired to play, and operated on the primeses that whoever pays the bills makes the rules. I could care less what their politics were as long as I got payed. I wish Pete well on the gig, Hopefully, the CHICKS will do their music and stay out of politics. They are talented enough that they don't need controversy to stay popular. I think we all should get this behind us and give the CHICKS a break. There I go again saying much more than usual. how this has evolved into a discussion of Soldiers on the Battlefield is a bit of a stretch.
I believe the entire discussion is related to artists/performers using there SOUNDSTAGE as a platform to spew a particular political stance.
My own personal stand on this is that any artist or performer, I dont care who they are or what there Politics are,has no place discussing politics when folks in attendance have paid for a performance.
Artists/performers have no place disussing politics or personal views when they DID NOT sponsor the event or pay the entire TAB.
It is NOT free Speech to tell an audience that paid for a ticket what your views are on an issue or issues that have nothing to do with the reason a ticket was purchased. It is NOT free speech when someone else paid for your platform..and is paying you to perform instead of talk politics...
Try going into work on Monday and standing up and giving a lecture to all your co-workers about the War , for or against..When your Boss tells you to shut up and get back to work pull out the FREE SPEECH card..lets see what happens...
Personally, I like the Chicks and think they are very talented. Would I buy the New CD ? Maybe, maybe not, but not for political reasons, it would be based purely on MUSICAL appreciation.
Many times each of us can get so hung up on our own side of an arguement that we can't see the Forest for the Trees.
This whole arguement about Soldiers etc..is so far off base...each one of us can offer an opinion or a story..and me too..3 young nephews could not wait to enlist..and go to Iraq...2 very close friends..quit there jobs..went to Iraq on special Military assignments..one is back for the 3rd tour...
Neither Bush or Natalie had anything to do with there decisions...
I happen to like Natalie.. I just think at some point she should come to the realization that some of her fans don't agree with her politics and don't relly care much to hear what her political views are....they probably just want to see her sing.
this is called maturity..
