I've had many over the years. Right now it seems to be Laura Cantrell. I agree Sara Evans album "Three Chords & the Truth" is one of the best country albums ever made. It's produced by Pete Anderson.

Martina Mcbride,Alison Krauss,Shania Twain,Connie Smith and I had the privilege to see and hear Laney Hicks for the very first time at the Tulsa convention show in May and she is not only a very attractive lady, but an awesome singer and it just sounded like Connie Smith all over again. My husband can't quit smiling for days when he hears Connie Smith sing or much less hear one of her songs Image.....

My all time favorite is Emmylou Harris. Been in love....er following her for 25 or more years. The second time I saw her live a up and coming band, "Alabama" opened for her. I remember they played "Green River" always a good ol song. The "Sally Rose" tour was one of the best shows I ever saw, and in a small venue. The "Spy Boy" tour was good. Here during the Olympics. I did not have the album, and was shocked when she took the stage with two black men, and a guy with a strange looking Vox Mando guitar. The music was incredible, and I was at the foot of the stage. Totally amazing, and she looks better in person. I share Tony's fantasy about playing back up for her... sorry for the rant.
Patty Loveless is amazing, pure and simple.
I like Nanci Giffith and Bonnie Raitt's counrty tunes (all their other stuff too).
Paulette Carlson deserves mention.
Shania please sing more country. Totally amazing voice.
And my second (maybe first all time) favorite
Ms. Patsy Cline (and Mandy Barnett). I love female country singers, period.

Ok, now boys - TRUST ME!! This woman sings fantastic, wrenching country ballads.
Her debut album was pure country - before she and Mutt got together. Here's a description:
quote:
When Shania Twain's self-titled debut came out in 1993, it was impossible to predict the impact she would soon have, not only on country music but on the pop world as well. She hadn't yet hooked up with producer/hubby Mutt Lange, so there's less pop crossover material here than on her subsequent releases. Instead, mainstream country is the order of the day: romantic ballads colored by appropriately sorrowful-sounding steel guitar (Sonny Garrish), and perky up-tempo numbers capable of inducing a line-dance at a moment's notice.
Twain's emergence as a bared-navel sex symbol was still in the future, so there's less of a focus on the randy, sensual material that would characterize albums like COME ON OVER. "God Ain't Gonna Getcha For That" explores the mores of the honky-tonk lifestyle, while "There Goes the Neighborhood" is a chronicle of the domestic carnage that occurs around the narrator. Many changes would occur in the years to come, but SHANIA TWAIN still sports the lovely yet brassy voice and carefully constructed tunes that the singer's fans have come to expect from their heroine.

One of her first albums, The Woman in Mehas some country cuts. Home Ain't Where His Heart is (anymore) will make you sob like a baby, Carl! I sure do hate to see a grown man cry! Laney Hicks!

My all-star imaginary perfect band would be:

Laney Hicks - singing
Russ Hicks - steel
Albert Lee - lead guitar
Gerry Hogan - 2nd guitar
Pete Wingfield - piano
Brian Hodgeson - bass
Pete Baron - drums

......this was exactly the band that entertained us for 2 hours at last years British Steel Festival. What a show!
