David,

Let's not forget Harley-Davidson...built in a woodshack out back. Now look at 'em. I'd rather still own a Harley today than a krotch rocket...Heck, I got 3 now. BTW my Carter sounds just fine to me.

Jody, also, I can see a lot of good and some greatness in this thread, reread all of it and I feel you'll edit you post when you see what happend here, and what human nature has done on it. It takes the intelligence you have to see it but you shouldn't have a speck of trouble doing so.The lesson doesnt have a lot to do with steel however it does apply to life. Is this a great forum or what?--------Bobbe (Now I can't figure out what Ann Fabian is saying)Looks more like the front page of the New York Times).Ann,I'm just picken' like always!
[This message was edited by BobbeSeymour on 29 June 2001 at 11:30 AM.]

[This message was edited by BobbeSeymour on 29 June 2001 at 12:58 PM.]

Bobbe, my dear friend.

You are a genius. You propose a question then play the players. Answering the
question is important to the players . But to you the answers are what’s
importance, The question is irrelevant.

It is a test of responses. It’s about human nature, right?

Bobbee,do you want me to send the snake in a cage or a box. A box you can just open up and let it run free in your store.Smiley promised to come in and feed it rats once a month. That would be educational, wouldn't it? Image Image ImageRay

Hey Jody, a Fender 1952 Telecaster was built in a factory, wasn't it? And you would be hard pressed to find a more valuable instrument today. Well maybe a 1954 Stratocaster. Wait, wasn't that built in a factory, as well?

Well there goes the theory about 'factory' guitars being somehow inferior....

Dan,,,If you saw Leo's original so called factory, yes your theory would apply,,but Leo's old factory was nothing but an oversized garage,,,maybe the size of a "Midas Muffler shop"

The original distribution was done by Radio Tel Equipment Co ,,,they were also mfg's of Rickenbacker instruments,,,Don & leo had an arrangement with F.C, Hall owner of Rickenbacker to warehouse & distribute from that location.

Leo's so called "factory" was not on the same premise's No it wasnt a garage,,but it wasnt a factory either,,,,lets say it was like Frankensteins laboratory,,,ya never know what Leo would create next.....did Dr. Frankenstein have a factory?? I dont know? I haven't seen or spoken to Bela Lugosi for years,,,ya know Bela Lugosi played a Telecaster,,,,but it had to be back in its case by "Dawn" or it would turn into a Gibson. Hope that answers your question...

Jody, thanks again for your historical (not not to mention hysterical) contributions.

I do have a question. To me as an outsider it seems a good deal of the genius of the Fender company was in coming up with designs that were manufacturable on a mass scale. Even though the Tele was designed in Frankenstein's workshop, the identical design was mass manufactured later in the 50s. Am I on track?

Dan,,,,you are right on the track,,,there was a good quantity being produced later on
but never enough to satisfy the demand, although understand Fender was not shaking the world at that time.

I cannot or do not recall the amount of Telecasters produced daily,,,Iam not really an expert on production output etc,,,Forrest White (passed on 7 years ago) could have answered any and all questions re production.

I had so many telecasters slip through my fingers years ago as well as tweed amps,,all of us "wished we could have filled our garages with Tele"s and Strats and kept them till now,,but who knew back then.

Leo often asked me why the big fuss over all "those old guitars he manufactured back then,,,he would say,,,,"what is sam hill do they pay so much money for something that cost so little to manufacture when I could build a better guitar today) that was back in the late 70's at MusicMan.

He could never understand,,he was certainly never happy with his product and kept making changes every week or so,,,very inconsistent
always looking for a "better way"

Thanks for asking,,,wished it were 1950 again
I liked the 1950 Chevrolet convertibles then too,,,I had a 57 Belair convertible sold it years ago,,,wished I had it now with all those Fender guitars and amps back then....

Can tell you this,,,when Speedy ran the Fender warehouse in Tulsa,,,I would call him often during the day and as all the other salesman would "beg for merchandise" Speedy would say,,,,Hey guys,,,I dont build em ,,call Leo or Don (Randall) ask them what the deal is.

One day I must have called Speedy 10 times for help for a number of different dealers,,,just ask for a couple of guitars for each to satisfy the dealers...one day this is what happened.

I received a phone call and the voice on the other end said,,,,is this Jody??? I said yes it is,,,,,who is this...???? the voice on the other end answered.....this is HOWARD,,,
I said Howard who??? the voice replied,
HOWARD YOU LIKE TO KISS MY A ^%^&...and hung up....It was Speedy,,,he often did things like that..
A great player,,,person, friend, and he ran that Fender warehouse better than anyone ever
did,,,CU down the road PS when I would call Speedy back and ask him if it were he that called,,,I could hear him "snickering" in the backround,,,he was a funny guy,,he tried to disguise his "missouri drawl" but was not successfull trying to convice me it wasn't he that called....PS why does it read copyright below?? who the hell would steal this??? how'd that happen? all I have reserved is a bleacher seat to watch those lousy New York Mets,,,reserved for an idiot like me to sit through that they call baseball,,,UGH
