Yee haw!
I have another gutted orphan Fender 400 I will be "customizing". Since my less than stellar wiring skillz never realized the full output of your last offering I am thrilled to get in the cue. 8)

I seem to remember you got my "Fountain" ... My only under the strings unit.

That was the first time I used a Halbach magnet array ... Shot the field up nice and high.

I gave one to the late Ken Ufton ... He used it in his Fender pedal steel ...

I remember showing it to Kamaka Tom in my room at Joliet ...was giving it to Ian to take back to his dad.

Kamaka was too close to the desk and didn't have a firm grip on it ...

And it leaped out of his hand and latched onto the lamp ... Scared the crap out of him ...

No way!!
While sitting in my chair at Alan Akaka's class over on Kauai, I heard this interesting tone coming from an old 6 string a guy was playing 3 seats down..
That guy was Kekoa Blanchett. I asked him what kind of PU that was, and he just casually said, " a Rick Aiello fountain PU"......
I'm like what?!? Asked him how he got that..and he said he wrote him a letter...
Cue the jealous rage :x :x
Anyway, sounded real cool and different, kinda a chime-like effect.
I've got one of your first edition horseshoes, the kind with the magnet pieces bent around. Someday will get around to putting it on an instrument of some kind..
I'm getting one of those hollow-neck tricones from NRP real soon, how cool would it look somehow fitted on that? :whoa:

Ron...please tell me you aren't gonna bore holes in the top of a $4000 guitar hand-built by Don Young, glorious though Rick's pickups are?

Here was my Fountain. Steve Miller in Rick's neck of the woods now owns and plays it. I didn't have it wired correctly so I didn't feel the force of it's magnetism.

Yes , I remember now ... Beautiful steel !!!

Steve M. is overdue for his annual road trip out ... He hasn't met Luigi yet ...

Steve, it's like a TB ward out here now ... 3 of 6 are real sick ... so maybe in a couple weeks ... And I got some tube dampers to keep the Pro Junior's 12AX7s from rattlin' when the Boob hits a G ...

That's so funny. I wrote essentially the same thing to a customer today talking about a 'Shoe.

Just the coverplate!
Sort of visualizing.. Been waiting for that guitar over 2 years. Put in an order with Industrial guitars for a lap with Rick's horseshoe, next day Shannon calls, --The tricone's almost done, so I put that project on hold.
--By the way, Don's handed the duties to Jason and his guys now. --still 3-4K (getting a brass LEFTY)
I had RA #11 for awhile, MRI PU, sold it for funds for the hollow-neck, then that damn hollow frypan from down under, now I'm committed for somewhere around 7K... You should see the look on my wife's face! :alien:
--way too impulsive...

Rick-- Am thinking President's Day weekend might be a good time to roll down...maybe bring the Hamill steel (Fountain) and the Ricky 59 (Potbelly) to compare...hope the contagion stops ragin' soon!

Steve H.-- Yeah, Rick tweaked the wiring in your cool Fender 400 conversion-- now it's even more of a powerhouse! Looking forward to hearing about Fender conversion #2....

Yikes! But to tell the truth I'm that impulsive myself - just don't have the cash or I'd be in deep and very hot water with my wife! :)

I had - past tense - one of the early NRP Steel tricones, but let it go very soon after it arrived, just could not justify the expense. So my reaction was just a gut thing from missing that guitar, now safely in the hands of a very nice gentleman in Switzerland.

Sorry for more OT stuff, but the hollow frypan you mention, is that by Ross Coole? By all means PM me so we don't mess up this thread...

The "Boob" will take on any and all challengers ...

Just don't forget the "Growlers" ...

Rick, I still have the horseshoes you gave me. I removed them from the Corian steel before I sold it, and put the conventional shoes on it.
These are the ones with the little magnets embedded in the "stuff" in the shoes !
They are going in a maple/purple heart combo body that's been a back-burner project for a while.
I may get fired up and finish that guitar this year :D

Bill, that Corian steel was a beauty ...

Here is the unit I made for the Boob's 25.5" neck. I went with black wrinkle on the bottom to blend in with the body ... and gloss black on top for some flare

Each coil is wound to 1.5k Ohm ... 3k in Humbucking mode or in "A$$ Kicking" mode ... which I think really brings out the best in the over/under design.

I'm hoping to get it installed this evening ... but it's Dusty's 8th birthday today and I may be too "fueled up" from the punch and cake to get much done tonite ... :\

She's a bit too much to handle ... On the lap.

I'm having Mark R. build a stand for her ... http://www.deluxe34.com/about.html

Figure she deserves to be held properly ...

Here is the CoilSurround pickup I made for my six string Bronzepan ...

It's only 3.825" long ... with a sensing length of 2" ...

I built a Ricky style mount for it ...

I got a push-pull pot ... to move between humbucker and 'kick a$$' mode ...

Hope to have it done by Saturday ... this is the last unit I'll build for myself (ran out of cast steels to retrofit).

My wife got the majority of my 'tooling up' bills ... Man, was she pissed   :P

Better start offering them up for sale soon ... before the bills for "The Fountain v 2.0" start rolling in ...

That looks cool Rick, I like the textured finish 8)

A question, would it be possible to build the top array into an appropriately sized and routed piece of rosewood or such?

Yep ... top, bottom and mounting plate ... lined with copper foil.

You could even make "end caps" for the cases ...

You could ease the edges ... round them ... whatever ...

As long as I had my inner area to fill up with all my stuff ...

For that matter ... If you don't want an adjustable air gap and have screw adjustments on top ... although it is very handy when you use turnings that have real big bass strings ... Then go to tunings with smaller bass strings ...

A fixed air gap ... Would allow for a "complete enclosure" ... Top and bottom fitting flush via small dowels ...

Yep ... A lot of fun and attractive possibilities ...

For someone skilled in the "Wooden Arts" ...
