Since I'm under contract to a record company, I have to clear it with them first, but I can't see them saying no. They will most likely want the line "Courtesy of Laurel Records" in the liner notes.
The tunes I think would be most appropriate for this project are "Afternoon Of A Faun" (which at 12 minutes, is probably too long,) or "Gymnopedies #2" from Firebird Suite,"Maria" or "One Hand One heart" from West Side Story, or "Asturias," "Dance of Terror," or "Fantasia Inca" from Spanish Steel.
I'm far too close to this to be able to objectively decide which of these to use. b0b, you will have to make that decision. If you wish, I'll burn you a CD with those tracks so you don't have to go looking for them.

You pick the song, Mike. I'm not going to get into the business of judging other people's music.

There are a lot of people in the non-pedal section that post their performances regularly. Joey Ace has spread the word in that section so I anticipate you will have a good showing.

If they don't then they should sign up for my Procrastination Workshop. (If they ever get round to it, that is.)b0b wrote:I hope that enough members respond.
I, myself, have a definite intention to submit something. Right at the moment my recording equipment is in the process of being moved and I need to wire it up again. I actually moved the equipment to the new location back in January, and I'll connect it up in the fullness of time...

b0b,
Great idea, I'll be sending an original tune selection real soon!

Wow Mike, I never realized that you wrote those tunes!

I have spent four hours in the studio so far trying to record the psg solo for the instrumental I want to send in to bOb. I must have done 150 bad takes by now. I can't stop thinking about all of you guys listening to what I play, and it rattles my nerves.
I'm not complaining -- I think this is funny actually -- it makes me laugh at my neurotic self, and I plan to try and try again until I get something that I won't be ashamed of.
I meant it as a compliment to all of you folks actually -- I really want what I record to be good enough so that at least some of you guys will like it. What I do on the psg is pretty atypical, and quite minimalistic compared to the real greats of psg, but maybe if I can come up with a melody that is compelling enough, it will make up for my simplistic technique. Just wanted to let all you great players know I am thinking of you affectionately and trembling in my boots! Maybe I'm not the only Forumite who feels this way?

I give music lessons on several different instruments in Cambridge, NY (between Bennington, VT and Albany, NY). But my true love is pedal steel. I've been obsessed with steel since 1972; don't know anything I'd rather talk about... www.barryhyman.com

Bob, I love this idea and I am wondering if you'll need someone to do the cover art for the CD? I am an artist and would love to do the cover art but maybe you could take submissions on that too. Just a thought.
Also, maybe you'll get so many submissions that you'll have the option of seperating the E9 country stuff from the C6th non-country stuff on 2 CDs. Again, just a thought. Don

Cover art? This is a data CD-R of MP3 files. I really wasn't thinking that it would need artwork and color printing. Just some simple black text printing on the disk saying what it is should suffice.

b0b,
As I think more about it I believe your concerns about having enough submissions for even one cd are probably realistic. With that in mind, I would guess that those of us who do submit one original composition could probably submit two or even three. So maybe you could have a CD with 40 or so tunes done by 15 to 20 different members if need be. (?) Don

We're just getting started, Don. I really like the idea of 50 steelers on one disk. I'm not ready to abandon it yet.

It's already been said, but let me reiterate that a project like this is going to take some time, so let's all step back and let it breath. Composing an original instrumental piece takes time, as well as getting it recorded. Many may not have immediate access to the necessary equipment to get it done, myself included. There are other factors as well which could slow the process even further, so let's exercise a little more patience. I'm sure the end result will be worth it, and then some.
