Hey Roger,

I think you are exactly right about the cultural divide. For example, and please don't take offense, I never have quite gotten the Benny Hill thing, though I know he was a huge star. I grew up listening to the Opry and on many Saturday nights Dad and I would have to go sit in the car to get the signal. Just different roots I guess.

Roger, I have alwlays enjoyed your posts, you sound like a very interesting man. Let me know if your tours bring you this way (GA, SC), I'd love to visit. I do alot of the steel shows around the Southeast, come see us some time.

Hello, Jim

Thanks for your nice comments, 'though I have a feeling you're in the minority around here!!

I'll certainly keep your location in mind. We used to live in the Asheville, NC area (much closer to you than we are now!) but we moved down to Naples to accommodate a change of job for my wife, Susie. She's a theatrical costume designer (we actually met on a 'Patsy' show in '99) and she's currently in that position here at the Naples Dinner Theatre. As I am prepared to travel in order to work, my location is of less consequence. There's been a benefit, though - I've done many a show at the NDT as a result of the connection, and I'm starting yet another 'Always - Patsy Cline' at her theatre this weekend. It's nice to get a good check AND sleep in my own bed!

Benny Hill: Jim, I never 'got it', either. I thought his show to be lewd and crass, and was glad to see it exported! I think that American TV at its very best is unsurpassed ( 'NYPD Blue' was a favourite of mine, and the best TV comedy - 'Cheers', 'Home Improvement', is well-written and subtle humour). I just think that when TV is bad here, it's really bad!

No, Benny Hill couldn't make me even smile, but I loved 'Fawlty Towers'.....

I can keep a straight face all the way through a Hee Haw show, but I can't watch an episode of Fawlty Towers without laughing. Too bad the show ran for only one season.

Well said, Leslie!

There are actually twelve half-hour episodes of 'Fawlty Towers'. They were made as two series and broadcast as two six-week runs in the UK.

I find I can watch them time and again, but I'm rather glad that John Cleese wasn't tempted to spread the idea too thin and go for a third. Believe me, it wasn't for a lack of demand from the British public.

They're certainly a long way from 'The Benny Hill Show', and even further from 'Hee Haw'....
