Rick, you've explained microphonics and vibrasonics, but what about when the magnetic pull is strong enough to pull a string's harmonic overtones out of tune? This is common on Stratocasters and other 6 string guitars. It's particularly noticable when playing the bass string above the 12th fret. I guess i'm asking if this ever happens on steel guitars. Also, what would be the name for that phenomenon. Magnetphonics?

By the way, Dimarzio makes a line of pickups with reduced magnetic pull. I've tried a set of these on an Epiphone Casino and it helped a lot.

Looks fantastic and I'll bet it sounds great, too. Love to hear it--clip?

I have little experience with pickups that only "pull down" on the strings.

The phenomenon you speak of is a result of this downward force vector altering the wave function of the string .

Jason would be the one to comment on that kinda stuff.

In this new pickup ... the strings are sitting "Dead Center" of the field... without any pole pieces altering the lines of flux. ...

So the strings are pretty much free to "sing" along because of the effects of vector "cancellation" ... to some extent anyway.

And the coil gets bath-ed with a serious amount of "juice" ... so the output is right up there with the horseshoe pickups.

Ahhhhh ....

Here is the set I sent off to Jason yesterday.

I clean stuff up much better for other folks ... than I do for myself ... Image

We both have had alot of emails asking price, availability, etc ....

Once Jason gets these, puts in his bobbin and mounts them in his steel ... he will have alot better idea about all that stuff.

I guess my timing was good with these ... Image

Wish I could say the same about my steel playin' ... Image

...looks like a powerful little unit, Rick.

Does it ever pull the finger picks from your fingers? Image

I wanted to see how powerful I could make one ... and I achieved 1500 gauss (0.15 Tesla)... mid-gap on one prototype.

I should have called it an iMRI ...

The PoleStar N-10 is a 0.12 Tesla (1200 gauss) machine used in Neurosurgery operating rooms..

Anyway ...

Seems that ever since I started messin' with neodymium-iron-boron ... I've been fightin' with the "Paradigm" ...

That Weak or "Aged" magnets = Vintage sound.

That strong magnets produce a harsh, overly bright tone ...

That NIBs and Samarium Cobalt can only be used in very minute amounts ...

I have even been "laughed at" by some pretty big names in the "business".

Well ... I guess its time for a "New Paradigm" ... cause this pickup is gonna show alot of folks that High Field Magnetic Pickups produce big fat, crisp, clear tone ... with enough bass response to shake a log home.

Sorry if it seems like I'm ranting ... but recent events have left me a tad "bitter".

So, does this design dodge the hassles by Rickencrapper, should it go into production?

Rick,

Keep up the good work. To hell with those laughing idiots.

Ron ... they will be in production ... as soon as Jason strums across his strings ... Image

This whole "intellectual propery" stuff is too intellectual for me ...

I'm crawling back in my hole with my physics and chemistry texts ... and maybe a Playboy magazine ... Image
