I have an old stand from the 40's that I bought from LT Zinn for the purpose of making some stands like it. I thought about making the parts with stainless steel, which would be less expensive than chrome plate, but even then it sure wouldn't be cheap. Maybe plain steel with powder-coating will work. A friend plans on getting a powder coating set-up, so maybe the will be possible.

I saw a guy last night using a cymbal stand with some sort of modified clamp attached. Junior Brown uses what looks like a mic stand for his guit-steel.
