I grew up with an AM radio in my ear, wern't no stinking TV back then. I'm 66. I remember listening to those 50kw clear channel stations and some not in the US, XERF for one and several real power houses south of the border. I was scanning the AM band in my truck the other night, and still found a few old friends WHO,WWL,KMOX,KOAI, also did some looking on the internet, and as many times as I have listened to WLS, I did not know that Sears Roebuck owned that station, learn something every day. But it sure brought back memories of laying in bed at night listening to radio before going to sleep. I also remember the summers that I visited with Aunt Jenny (Natchez) she had one of those old radios that was about 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide, with the tuning eye and about 5 different bands, that thing would tune all sorts of shortwave bands, but the favorite was WWL on Sunday night and the Preservation Hall dixieland music, GREAT.

Starting when I was about 12,I would go back and forth between Ralph Emery on WSM and"Hoss"Allen on WLAC...Marty Robbins and other Opry stars would visit Ralph in the studio and sing and play, and of course Ralph played the country hits of the day..."Hoss"played Muddy Waters and B.B.King records all night...I went back and forth till all hours of the night...I think it really messed my head up.

Oh, yeah, Ralph Emery's great all nighter with guests popping in and out, and "The Hossman" at WLAC who would advertise for Dixie Peach hairdressing pomade. Played the greatest blues recordings. Never knew if the guy was black, or white, trying to sound black. Charlie Douglas at WWL. Then there was the late Wolfman Jack before he was TV famous broadcasting from down in sunny Mexico. He actually did a broadcast one time from a home made bunker while some sort of rebellion was going on, and you could hear the guns going off in the background. Now man, that takes a big pair of Kahuna's to do that. Live radio was so great, then they got satellite feed and it all became just one big plastic mess. Oh, for the days of live country music, the Shadow, and Hi-yo Silver away!

..ah yes, several mentioned "Del Rio" the night-time station with a signal that probably reached the moon....but no one mentioned the Del Rio "stars" Wayne Rainey & Lonnie Glossen, and their fabulous bargains on "baby chicks"....guaranteed to "arrive alive". Hossman advertised baby chicks too...I wonder if that is where Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three got theirs from...

Found this a while back - a list of the 'clear channel' stations and their frequencies.
