Country Music Special Fails To Rally Fans
ABC's telecast of the CMA Music Festival failed to make much of a dent in CBS's usual Monday-night ratings supremacy. With a slate of reruns, CBS easily won the night with an average 5.6 rating and a 9 share. The ABC country music show placed third with a 4.5/9 in the 9:00 p.m. hour behind two CBS sitcoms and a new episode of Fox's Hell's Kitchen. At 10:00, it dropped to a 4.4/8 behind a repeat of CBS's CSI: Miami, which produced the night's highest rating, a 6.8/12.

I did not see the show that is being discussed and I am happy I did not. Call me old fashioned at 46 years of age, but this stuff they call country music today is awful. Half of the artists cannot even sing worth a flip and they are selling millions of records. Who is buying them? It sure ain't me. If Roy Accuff could see this junk out today and what is going on the "Not So Grand Ole Opry" he would be running people out the back door. When will it end? I am starving for some of the older country like Ray Price, Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn sang. When I lay down at night I turn my radio on to our local station and I can hear all of those artists sing. Even better than that, I can hear Buddy Emmons, John Hughey and Hal Rugg play and put me to sleep. Now that is real country music.

While I agree, what do you do with all the screaming fans in the audience at the CMA?When we lose the few greats that are left such as Porter,Little Jimmy,George,Jean Shepard, there will be NO ONE,AND I MEAN NO ONE to feel their shoes.
They are paying big bucks to be there.
Somebeody likes it....... A lot!
Pedal steel players are not liking the way "country music" is going.....But it is going the way it is.
We can either adapt, or be content to play in our bedroom for no one.
OR, do the occasional VFW for free.
Change is hard, but it is certain.
NOW, what are we pedal steelers to do?
Personally, I applaud the unconventional type players. RR, Sarah Jory, BJ Cole et al.
If we aspire to play only "traditional country" we will not play much (for an audience and much less for any money), I do believe..
Ever notice how much RR smiles and laughs as he plays? (or wails, if you do not like his style)
Laughing all the way to the bank..........

Barry, I don't know how to interpret those numbers myself, having never worked in TV-perhaps you or someone else can tell me how it works.
But I would hazard a ballpark guess that at least half-a-million to a million people watched at least a decent portion of that show-which is a whole lot more than "virtually NOBODY." After all, the population of the country is getting up toward 300 million, and there are a lot of TV's out there.
The result of which is that during this week, maybe another 30,000 units of Kenny Chesney CD'S are purchased, which unfortunately will just perpetuate the staus quo of the Nashville "Today's Hot Country" juggernaut.
I was actually going watch some of it, just to give it the old college try-but my wife insisted on CSI Miami!

Mark, a half-million people in any other context would, admittedly, be a LOT of people. A half-million out of the (collective) millions who watched TV that night is 'virtually nobody' - ask any network executive! This show lost out to it's competitors reruns, for Pete's sake ..... My compliments to your wife's good judgement.
[This message was edited by Barry Blackwood on 27 July 2006 at 09:32 AM.]

Man lots of good stuff here. The only two new CD's I purchased from new maninstream artist was Josh Turners Your Man and Martina's Timeless. Yes there are millions of dollars that are being made. I guess my whole point is that what we call country is not country anymore. I know time changes even Elvis was doing country in his final years.

We shouldn't be too surprised about the turn music has taken. It's all operated to turn the almighty buck and directed at 12-25 year olds who apparently have more disposable income than they know what to do with. I'm glad RFD-TV is around showing what country music really was. I'm just afraid that the Wilburn Brothers are going to get switched to the "History Channel".
Nice to see I'm not the only 40-something out there who feels this way.
[This message was edited by Joe Allwood on 28 July 2006 at 12:20 PM.]
