(5) I have had young band engineers walk up to my system and start in with the kick drum, not happy until every available watt in the entire rig was in use pumping out that giant thudding sound, and then proceed to try to fit a band and vocal mix into what was left!!??
If I had a dollar for every time I've encountered that dude...
When the sound guy is done with the gig, and he's packing up his rig, if the sound was done well, I always go give him a big atta-boy! of appreciation. I've heard excellent, and I've heard mud.
There was a mindset shift in 70s when a very prominent bass/kick drum sound became mandatory.
Uhh, yeah. That was "Disco" (for all of those who weren't around). Unfortunately, Disco also infected the country rock groups. Soon, mega-watt sound systems and sub-woofers were the rule in most all country bands. Line dancing (hillbilly disco) became popular, and we've suffered ever since.
Every time something "fresh and new" finds success (from the "Oh Brother" soundtrack, to Norah Jones, to Alison Krauss), the only common denominator of it all is the absence of throbbing electric bass lines and pounding bass drums.
