"Music" and the "Music Business" are two
separate things. Very seldom do they run on
the same track. Dale Watson is in a league
with Haggard, Cash, Waylon. Sad that he cannot reap the benefits he deserves.

What a shame. Dale should be enjoying all the rewards the music business has to offer --instead of being forced to decide between pursuing his craft and having a family. -GV

Charles.
nice to know SOMEONE agrees with me....heck, the stuff you/we hear today definately `ain`t country` heck..it doesn`t even classify as good rock n roll by any stretch of the imagination.
Easy to understand why some artists prefer to opt out of the Nashville recording scene and go ahead and do their own stuff...Kudo`s to them for it too.....how do we go about putting someone in charge that knows what they are doing and isn`t TOTALLY CLUELESS???.
Makes me wish I`d taken up training as an audio engineer or music producer or something just to keep our music out of the hands of these Richard Craniums that do it today.

[Too country, for country]This was not only told to Dale Watson, but late in John Cash's career when he was looking a new label,he was told the same thing. If anyone there on [MU-SICK]row can explain this[feel free to call me collect]It would be worth it to hear your explantion of one of the most ludicrous statements ever made.Dont come up with this crap about crossover appeal[That dog don't hunt.]

The guys like Tim McGraw, Kenny Cheeseball, etc.....are the ones that have the worlds ear right now. These are the artists (and I use the term loosely) that could change the course of country music for the better. However, they're not going to mess with a formula that makes them, as well as their record companies millions of dollars .Looks like we're stuck!

You can only do it for the love of the music for so long. Wayne Hancock, Dale Watson, Robbie Fulks, BR-549, The Derailers, Heather Myles, etc... have been carrying the torch for country music, which is to say that they've been beating a dead horse. And, although us diehards out here appreciate their music and their efforts, it's hard to put appreciation in the bank.

I have to say that I will miss Dale, but he is making the best choice for his kids.

We have kids around the same age and they are at a stage where they need him now. You can't replace these years. When they grow he can resume his career and he will have been able to acrue a ton of material to write and sing about in the ensuing years.

I think he is a trucker at heart and will be doing something he loves anyway.

It's almost like a movie script in the making (Tender Mercies comes to mind). He will be able to catch the next wave of Country music that will be waiting for a talent like him after everyone realizes that they have been swindled by the current crop of Cr_p that was sold to them.
Long Live 'The Real Deal" Dale and enjoy your life!!

I spoke with Gene Kurtz last night, Dale's bass player. He's looking for a gig after Jan. 1. He's good on bass and sings well. Contact me if interested.

I don't think it's necessarily about being "too country," or whatever. There ARE real country guys who've made it, and made it huge---George Strait, Merle, Alan Jackson, etc. I think that Dale is one of the unfortunates who, though EXTREMELY talented, just didn't catch on with everybody. So he's doing the smart thing, while he's able to work a day job. How many people do the rest of you guys know who made a few records, thought they'd make it big, and didn't have sense enough to know they weren't gonna make it big? A guy I used to work for is now doing 9 years in the pen---didn't want to face reality.
Dale, good luck in the new job, and I'm sure we'll get to hear you again, sometime in the future---and it'll be worth the wait!

Dale has been playin/singing music for his living since he was 16 years old and he is now 43. He also has almost 20 albums of his own(99% of all songs; he wrote) and has played/sang on over 100 Albums and commercials in his music life.
So Dale is hardly a fly-by-night guy and he has done just fine financially.
We can all certainly speculate as to what and why he has made this decision; and we can all speculate as to how long of this; is or what, of what may come of Dale Watson> but Bottom line:
Dale wrote a song many moons ago called "Help me Merle; I'm breaking out in a Nashville Rash"; and if we all just listen and learn the words and their meaning, we will know the what's and why's of this issue with Dale and his decision to put his music life on the "Back-Burner" and put his family on the "Front-Burner"> and if you've never heard that song or are not familiar with it and it's meaning; than .........>there ya go....

Dale not playing anymore is the second most depressing musical happening that has occurred to me. Tops on the list was when Jeff Newman died. Dale is number one on my "play" list and the top of the list of any country artist I have heard. What a downer...at least I have his CD's.

Just got through listening to the new Clint Black CD's tracks, and sure looks like he is on the right track...But, how in the world can most of these guys even compare to Dale Watson...he has a 100 tracks out that are excellent. How does this happen? Life is not fair, and we all know that. Some of us get cancer, diabetes, heart attacks..and for no reason. But in a world of talent, and those making great livings (fortunes), how does a Dale Watson just get pushed under the rug...perhaps one of the best talents Country Music has ever seen. Great writer, singer, entertainer, musician..What an absolute loss to country music...

Bowie,

Dale explained the "fairness" issue best in his own words in "Blessed or Damned".

If he moves up this way, I'm thinking Dale Watson and Curry Coster would be a match made in heaven.
