Well Randall is from Dallas and he did a great job on the Jay Leno Show with the lovely Jessi Alexander (his girlfriend) singing harmony.

Rob Ickes was playing a lap steel standing up.

It looked to be built by his dobro guy, Tim Scheerhorn, and sounded great.

What a beauty! A semi-hollow body, f-hole resonator/lap steel. Rob had some good solos and everyone watching got a quality dose of lap steel playing.

"Rose in Paradise" always gives me goosebumps. "Everytime he talked about her, you could see the fire in his eyeeyeeyes..."<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 29 September 2005 at 03:28 PM.]</p></FONT>

Right on! My brother has always been the bigger Waylon fan between the two of us. I liked Waylon's early stuff but it wasn't until he added Moon that I really started diggin' it. My favorite CD is the re-release (with the added tracks) of Waylon Live.

We saw Waylon play live at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park California back when he was still skinny. Image He played at an outdoor "theater", if you could call it that, and knocked us dead. Since we caught the early show we were able to get back in for the encore performance too. Waylon's biggest hit at the time was "Only Daddy..."; this was in the late 60's, before Knott's built the "John Wayne Theater".

I've probably told this story somewhere on the forum so forgive me if you remember it.

One of my all-time favorite concerts took place in about 1974 at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park (this was the former home of the 49er's before they moved to Candlestick Park).

The opener was New Riders Of The Purple Sage (at this point it was Buddy Cage on steel). The headliner was The Grateful Dead.

Sandwiched between the two was Waylon and The Waylors. This would seem like an unlikely group of bands until you realize that the Dead, along with the hippie image, loved to play many classics by Hag and Hank Williams, and Jerry Garcia had few equals as an American musicologist, and indeed had his roots in bluegrass. Of course New Riders was all about country rock.

The crowd of course, was the Dead crowd-a lot of tie-dye, the smell of patchouli oil and a pungent cloud of smoke over the stadium.

Everyone went nuts for Waylon! and when Moon would take a ride on steel, they went double nuts! Old Moon (well-a much younger Moon) was grinning from ear-to-ear in his black outfit, slicked-back hair, and boots.

What a great day it was!
