On the West Coast this aired but the vocal track was deleted so that the lip-syncing goof was not as apparent. I didn't know what was going on! Simpson's "explanation" at the end of the show gave it away though.
Why did her second performance air at all out here? They could have just filled that time with 30 more seconds of commercials and saved face, right?
Anyway... at least when my band screws up on stage it's for real.

Greg, thanks for explaining that. My daughter Tivo-ed the show and i wondered why i didn't hear her pre-recorded voice. But it's such bull. If SNL is really a "live" show, why would they delete her voice for the west coast? Unless it included profanity or something like that, they should have left it in. After all, it shows what really happened. It's like an instant re-write of history. And blaming the band is such a cheap shot. What band would ever make the mistake of playing the same song twice on a major TV show? The error had to have come from the sound booth. As Earnest says, lip synching is nothing new. I have a feeling the whole band was synching and not really playing, even the drummer.
Hey, if they can delete her voice after the fact, on a "live" show, maybe they can fix George Bush's gaffs in Pro Tools before they reach Europe.
[This message was edited by Dan Sawyer on 25 October 2004 at 11:31 AM.]

Bless their hearts, they tried to save the day... but it was to no avail. Check out the expression on the bass player's face... they were dying, man. On national television, to boot...sheesh...
Once that sequence starts, you're locked into whatever it plays.
A friend of mine once invited me to a gig. His Mac locked up and there was no show.

I'll betcha $100 that it went something like this: The drummer was playing to a laptop running ProTools or Digital Performer which had a countoff followed by a click track and on a second track was her vocal which was also piped to the sound man and brought up on a fader and mixed just like it was a live mic. Everybody else was playing live and following the drummer. The chick singer hears the band and her pre-recorded vocals in her earbuds, the drummer and the rest of the band hears all that plus the click in their earbuds. The drummer usually is in charge of hitting the spacebar and counting the band in. He obviously forgot to cue up the second song sequence(too high maybe?)and when the earlier song started to play, since there was nothing on the sequence but click and vocal,it wasn't that obvious until the vocal came in that they were playing to the wrong sequence. The band tried to pick up and run with the tune figuring it would be less humiliating to play the song twice than to crash and burn in front of billions of people but by then the chick had Millie-Vanillied. All that could have been avoided if the chick would have spent 10 years in a beer joint learning to sing w/a live band, deal with hecklers, club owners, booking agents, trainwrecks, learn how to work a microphone, etc and maybe even learn to write a song with a beginning, middle and end before she ventures into a recording studio and certainly before she goes on worldwide live TV. Yeah she and her crew sho-nuff sucked the oxygen right outa that room. They should rightly be sued for musical malpractice and sentenced to 6 sets a night,7 nights a week for 5 years at Benny's Rebel Room. -MJ-

Earnest,
I followed your link to her website and poked around a bit.
If you go there, there's a link on the left taking you to a comments page about appearing on the Today Show to explain the fiasco. At the top of that page, titled "community" there are links to the various personalities on the site. Click on the one which says "ashlee simpson", which I believe is supposed to take you to her profile.
I guess the proprietors of the site don't know it yet, but it's been hacked by someone with a twisted sense of humour. heehee

LOL
Or just 2 sets once a week at The Gin Mill.
Where they actually shoot the fake juxe box when the DJ ( in the back room, he won't come out front)
plays bad tunes.
Works for me.They should rightly be sued for musical malpractice and sentenced to 6 sets a night, 7 nights a week for 5 years at Benny's Rebel Room. -MJ-

I heard that Shania Twain uses the same type setup. Most of her show is recorded and lip synced. Anyone know anything about that?

next thing ya know there will be Acid Reflux pills for singers who lip synch..or at least a WARNING Label on the Acid Reflux pills bottle.
WARNING, DO NOT INJEST BEFORE LIVE LIP SYNCHING PERFORMANCES ON NATIONAL TV
MAY CAUSE IRREVERSBALE LIP SYNCHING LYRICS
"I had a bad stomach Ache so I sang the wrong words"..." uhh,I mean I lip synched the wrong song".." uhhmm..what I really mean is I am gonna sue the drug company because the pills for my Acid Reflux caused me to lip synch the wrong song and now my singing career is looking pretty hoaky"...
and all this time I thought breaking a 3rd string during the first tune of the night was the worst that could happen...

.....come on guys, give her a break! This is not criticism of anyone in particular, but with all of the technological "gizmos" used by steel guitar players today to make themselves sound "different" (and hopefully better), should we really be that negative about vocalists doing the same thing?
....now as for blaming someone else, I'm still for pointing at the bassman or the drummer!

My theory was confirmed when she came on the Today show and said that her drummer failed to scroll down to the next song sequence before he hit the start button. That doesn't excuse her and the rest of the phony crap that passes for music these days - it merely roots it out and exposes it for what it is - a technoscam. And her statement about how she never did it before, was sick, her father/doctor made her do it,and finally: "Everybody else does it...." simply does not fly. That dog won't hunt - but it'll sure leave a steamer on your front lawn. So Hell no I won't cut her a break - she sucks out loud, has proved it to the world, and deserves to swing in the breeze for it. The whole thing gives ME acid reflux - or is it an acid flashback.....hmmmmm -MJ-

...by he way, who the hell is Jessica Simpson? I was defending her performance in principle without a clue as to who she is! I have no experience with "girl" singers!

It seems they've fixed the hacked link.
If you wade through the fetid swamp of teary-eyed proclaimations of eternal love from fleeced 10-year-old fans on her comment board (along with lots of disappointed spleen venters), you can actually find this one thoughtful and articulate comment:
"Sure, lip sync and backing tracks are used all the time. The point is, America is just plain sick and tired of this half baked entertainment. THAT is the reason this is such a big deal, and why there are so many people talking about it.
Ashlee's flub is something that could have happened to a lot of "artists" on the charts now. These folks are not popular because of their talent. They are popular because their songs get played over and over, thanks to payola's more evolved gand-children.
They appear constantly on media outlets that have a vested interest in promoting easily manipulated "artists", namely the Viacom company (owners of MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, BET, and Paramount, CBS, Blockbuster, and CMT among others - check http://www.viacom.com/business.tin if you don't believe that), Disney (Walt would never allow such generic drivel as "Radio Disney" - a mainstay of these pop "artists"), and other megacorporations who would like to pick, choose and own every last bit of your personal entertainment experience.
Today's kids aren't very interested in actual music anymore. The music industry has beaten every last ounce of individualism out of them. They refuse to support talented, real, original artists because it's just cheaper to put together a less demanding, generic "artist" like Ashlee.
So in a way it's not really her fault at all. She's but a puppet in the game. Lip sync away, Ashlee. Don't let anyone blame you... you were jst doing your appointed job. Too bad you work for such a crappy employer. "

At least one person in a thousand understands.

Gene,
Jessica and Ashlee are sisters. I know this because my daughters are still in touch with pop culture and they interpret all this for me.
When Ashlee's faux pas took place, I was gettin' some shuteye, NOT watching SNL as I would've been 25 years ago. So I have to depend on others for my hipness.
Anyway, I feel bad for her and the band, but I'd love to see these stage gimmicks exposed for what they are. If you've got the talent, stand and deliver; if you ain't got it, stop pretending that you have.

I'm still the most disgusted with SNL with changing the broadcast on the west coast. What, are they in the pocket of her manager or record company?? How many times did we see Chevy Chase or John Belushi forget their lines, or start laughing when they weren't supposed to? SNL didn't edit that out. Just another sign that the media is getting less and less honest. I know, I know; it's just a comedy show.
