Yes she did John. She had the most unique and extremely rare (if not the rarest) "tenor" female voice I ever heard. I am so glad you added her to this list.

She was the voice that made the last Carter family, IMO.

To hear one of her solo recordings (she mostly sang female tenor behind other singers). Note: the download will decode the digital to analog at only 16K. This will take much from the recording and Anita's angelic voice.

But if you listen and try to tune out the losses of low fi decoding, one can still hear the beauty of her voice.

Click on the link. Scroll down to "Real Country page 26" and then scroll down to "Mama, Don't Cry at my Wedding" by Anita. Click on the guitar to hear it, click on the boots to download it.

Sadly Anita passed on a few years ago.

I will add to my earlier post Anita Carter as 3rd favorite. Thanks for reminding me of her John,

Since we are going to be at her house the 27th, my first pick is Laney Hicks. If I get to choose a second like Carl Dixon I would have to say Sammie Smith as I always loved that low growl in her voice.

Smiley Roberts will come in with a BIG vote for Jeannie Pruett. It's an age thing!!!!!!! GOTTCHA!!!!!!!!! Image Image Image

What Charles French said about Iris Dement! "Favorite" is too big a word in a world that has seen a lot of great artists. But I'm listening to Iris D a lot these days.

Once again, my favorite is "Laney Hicks"

She sang on my portion of the GA Peach Jam last Sunday and if you can't pick with Laney singing, you should give it up. Period

Well, to add my two cents worth here, it will come down to Anita Carter, Connie Smith, and a local singer in Minnesota, named Bev Rose. She can sing as well as any of the Nashville ladies, and better then some.

I would have to agree with Carl Dixon that Anita was the sound of the Carter Family when she was with Mother Maybelle and Helen and June. She could send shivers up your spine. I read on the Forum that the Bear Family Records company has finally put out a compilation of all of her songs. I will eventually buy this, but in the meantime, I have her on an LP as well as a couple of tapes with the Carter Family, and have downloaded some of the songs from Record Lady site as well.

Up until 1964, Patsy Cline was one of my favorites, but then came Connie Smith, and she became one of my favorite singers, and have seen her in concert as often as I could. I appreciate Laney Hicks, and she does an excellent job on Connie's music, but there will only be one original Connie.

I like all of the afore mentioned, ( well - MOST of the afore mentioned), but there was a girl that I imagine very few have heard of. I think that she was from here in Indiana, and her name was June Stearns. The material that was chosen for her - teamed with a voice that was unlike anyone elses that I'VE ever heard, is something that I've never forgotten.
I was just a kid, and I don't remember hearing anything from her since the '60s.

Loretta Lynn, Patty Loveless and Sara Evans.

Of the older generations I like Loretta best. Of the current lot I go with Patty Loveless.

Also, if you've never heard Sara Evans' first album "Three Chords and the Truth" you'd be impressed with what a great country singer she is. She's gone over to the pop side of things too much for me, but I've still bought some of her later CD's -- just to hear her sing.
