I believe my friend Michael Johnstone has penned the most accurate description of the parameters, techniques, marketing devices, and general qualities of rap/hip-hop music I've ever read.
I was in Sam Ash NYC looking for a scoring program.
I asked the sales "kid" what was the difference or benifits between Logic and Digital Performer, which I use.
He said he wasn't sure. I asked how he could be demoing the tools if he didn't know what was good or bad about them.
He said" well I am not a musician, so I can't tell you, but I do edit tracks..
He then said, "well, many of the best producers can't play either, so, so what if I can't."
It says a lot about that segment of the innner city music scene that a salesperson in a major outlet actually believes that getting a Grammy for editing a rap song qualifies someone as a "great Producer".
Tell that to David Foster, Danial Lanois, George Maritn and Quincey Jones.
They know that editing is a tool to save or expand something, not the motus operandi of producing music.
