Actually Noel does cut down the tree after taking enough time to decide that the grain is appropriate for the guitar and matching what the player has told him that he wants to see. His "walkabouts" into the "outback" span a good deal of time often driving more than 1,000 km to find just the right tree. Once he does (mine was Gidgee- a relative of the Acacia)- he takes a picture of the tree for posterity (to be delivered with the guitar to its new owner), cuts it down, and rough mills it on the spot- then making the long journey back home with his prize. The wood is left to dry for over a year before he begins his magic which then takes well over a year to complete- taking a month just to apply the finish. The attention to detail goes well beyond just pride- the guitars are perfect- and he sees to it that they play as good as they look. We all know that there are some fabulous guitars on the market these days and they are made by wonderful craftsmen who do it for a living and as such need to make a profit doing it in order to continue. It is not feasible to approach the Anapeg in this fashion. I would be greatly suprised if Noel got $1./hr for his efforts- but that is not the point- it is quite obviously a labor of love and no one would ever undertake such a task with the idea that it would be a money making venture. Once completed, often the guitar is delivered to the recipient in person and Noel does whatever it takes to ensure that it is exactly what the player wants and fits him/her perfectly. You simply have to see and play one to understand the value. This guitar could and should not be compared to any other guitar being made- it's not fair to either party.
