For the record, Farris, as one of the few gentlemen, and I use the term loosely 'round these here parts, who has actually killed and eaten a possum, I'd just as soon eat a few pieces of pork done up in a mess of lard. Possum does go down easy, though, for the reasons stated in the last sentence. If you can convince Jennings to let me pick him up for the jam, then please do so. I'm about half serious about throwing him in the back of the truck...but only if I have to.

I stand corrected by Lyle, and even more so by Rainer. I got side tracked when I wrote 200%, what I ment by 200% is that you get 200% of your money back. A pedal steel is more like a commodidty than an asset. It is a piece of capital that a person uses and gets utility out of. It should be compared to a car, computer, or anything else that you use.
In this sense, I look at how much I pay for a guitar and I look at what the resale value is. If I can sell it for what I pay for it, and get a 100% of my money back upon resale, then it is a great capital investment. What commodities in your house can you get even 50% of what you pay for it? Your computer that using your now? HA.
Let's say I buy a guitar for $1,000 and own the guitar guitar for a year, and resell it at exactly what I paid for it, then I am only out $30 or so buck under the "loss due to inflation." But this seems like a small price to pay if I get to own a piece of pedal steel history for a year of my life. For the cost of $30 I can finally see for myself and own an old rack and barrel sho-bud that some of my favorite players actually used. Or see what "that sound" is that an emmons makes.
The only problem is these suckers are heavy to ship, and that needs to be factored into the price, so my $30 is more like $80 bucks. In this case I would think about it as leasing a pedal steel for 1 year at the low cost of $7 per month.

Take a look at this site for some good ideas you can look into for your tunings.

Well, the term investment implies that you do sell. If you don't sell, your "investment" is just dead capital. You might as well have buried your money under a tree ...

SAT.am,glad to see all the great opinions, and JACK glad to see you back on my friend.i love my 3 old sho-buds very much, still have to wonder about buying and recon how much they will bring in the future? nope, its not a money maker, but the enjoy of having, and showing them,as the proud owner!!and the sound,Just can't be beat.
I sometimes wonder about old upright pianos,i've helped send a few to the grave yard.seems most people just want to get rid of them, some are so pretty, but haul this thing off!!! farris

Sorry, Rainer, but I don't agree. Investment to me has always been more than a money thing. I'm glad to know my guitar has a good 'financial footing,' but return for me involves personal pleasure as well.<SMALL>If you don't sell, your "investment" is just dead capital. Farris,
People have told me my "Blondie" and "Red" were too expensive for old p/pull D10`s but I disagree, they have earned me their cost back and more!! If you play it and you love it the cost is irrelivant, and the workmanship and attention to detail that Tommy Cass put into the restoration is to me priceless........ I have many ex-wives but these two babes will stay with me until they pry them from my cold dead fingers!!!!!!!!

I bought an EMCI that is a better guitar than any I have had the opportunity of sitting down at in the 33 years I've been playing pedal steel. I've owned 8 guitars, 4 were new brand name guitars. They were all good guitars but the EMCI is an exceptionally great guitar that was 18 years old when I got it but I wouldn't trade it for a brand new guitar today. That includes all brands on todays market. This could be an exception to the rule, but I firmly mean what I say.

Obviously of the newer guitars, Zum's appear to hold their price very well -- a new MSA Millenium S12 Universal on the other hand sold recently for about $3500 USD when the owner paid about $5600 for it new. The guitar was about 18 months old I believe !!!!
A Marrs rebuilt Shobud would probably be the most desireable investment of them all IMO.

So someone tell me what my 1970's Shobud Double 12 is worth. The top and bottom fingers were removed on the C6th. I put it on the forum for sale a couple of months ago.
I got a couple of low offers that would never cause me to actually sell it. If I got a real offer I think might.

Ron.
This is a nice looking steel but it needs some serious work to get this one 100% again.
I think that that is the reason that everybody is not bidding and those who are bidding do this with a ridiculous price.I would try to find someone that will do this for you and make it like new again.
I would not part with a steel like this. But I can't talk for you of course.
