even Vince Lombardi in the locker room held up a football and said to the team, "this is a football", sometimes we all have to get back to basics, maybe that means a thumb and one finger and three strings....get that down and go on from there. I dated a Dane named Petersen, she told me the "O" was Swede and the "E" was Danish

Well Jim I think you've got it right. It does all get down to basics. I think we all go from the basic to the complex in everything we do. We learn to crawl before walking etc. Nevertheless, mistakes are going to be made. I remember once when I was in the studio recording some jingles I really blew one of my licks. The producer said, "That's it, that is what I'm looking for." I tried to tell him it was a mistake and he said that's what he wanted. He said," Let's play it again, just clean it up a little." Well, I tried for an hour to play that mistake clean and never did get it right that night. I guess the point is that I made a mistake that sounded different than the usual stuff I normally played. It was more inovative and creative. I have come to the conclusion that making mistakes while playing is not all that bad because it causes us to stretch and improve. By-the-way, I finally did learn to play the mistake cleanly, but it was after I got home and had some time to think without the pressure in the studio. What's this got to do with Danes and Swedes? Sorry!

Robert, if possible, the absolute best way to learn on the fast track is to play with a band. Even if it's just some buddys in a basement, learn some easy tunes and play out. When I got my first steel I had it on stage within 3 weeks. I sucked pretty bad at first, but got better in a hurry with the pressures of playing live.
