well carl i have to say that your outlook on used items is totally wrong for the most part. i am a new player (4 months) and i don't know a lot. but i bought a 12 string carter from soctty's (st.louis) and it looks great and i think it plays good. it is about a 75 model. i also have a carter starter (4 months old) that i would like to sell. there is nothing wrong with this starter. it plays great and sounds good too. if i have something sold i don't want to keep paying shipping charges. how many times and i going to have to ship it till it is sold. put yourself in that place. if you was selling a steel and someone just didn't like it how many times would you be willing to ship it till you got it sold. besides what is good to me might be junk to you. everyones oppinion is different. to make a request that "if i don't like it can i get my money back"is totally unreasonable in my view. but then again everyones oppinion is different.

In defense of Carl, I have to say he is right about some used guitars being problems. Especially if you buy from a distance like on Ebay, or even the Forum. Even if the guitar is in good condition, there are sometimes wierd setups that are difficult for a novice to get back to a standard copedent. If there is no active manufacturer who can supply parts, it can be very difficult to change the copedent. Sometimes even seemingly little things can be a problem to fix, such as the position of knee levers, or legs of non-standard length. Even if all of the above is good, the pedal/knee action might not be to the buyer's taste - it may have drifted out, or maybe because of the seller's different taste. Action can be very tricky for a novice to adjust. It's not always that the seller is being dishonest, but a novice buyer might not think of everything to ask about. But buying from a store and a knowledgable dealer like Scotty can eliminate these worries.
[This message was edited by David Doggett on 15 August 2004 at 04:45 PM.]

I buy good used things all the time for a fraction of the cost of new things. All my steels have been bought used. All my cars have been bought used, used and my current house was bought used.

I am glad that we have people like Carl around who buy new everything. If we didn't have people like Carl buying all new and taking a hit with depreciation, people like me would not be able to buy used. Keep up the good work Carl!! Continue to buy brand new things!!
