Well I started with a 6 string National purchased from Jack Pennewell [not sure of spelling] in 1946, would like to have that back just for sentimental reasons, my first. Then I purchased a Fender double 8 stringmaster when in the navy, Should have kept that. but as Doug Beaumier said in his post. "I'm happy with the guitar I have" An 8 string Melbert built by Bob Allen. It's a great instrument. As for Amps I had a Fender with Spring reverb I liked, but it's gone, I now have a PEAVEY 112, I'M HAPPY. Bars & picks, what ever is comfortable.

I've really enjoyed this thread. 'Very entertaining and educational. My honest answer to your question, unfortunately, will not be nearly as interesting as many of the others. I've been lucky to have played (but not owned) many of the most sought after steel guitars (vintage and new) out there, and I prefer mine. I have only one and I like its sound and feel more than any of the others I've played. As for amps, there is a certain sound that I love and seek out that is present on many of the old country, Western swing, and Hawaiian records that I love, and, while I haven't played through many amps, the only ones I've found that produce that sound are really cheap, small amps (8" speaker or smaller) that typically sell for $75.00 or less used. I just can't get that sound out of the expensive amps I've used. When I learn to play better, I'm sure my opinions will changes, but that's where I am on this question today.

The following would be the steel guitars that I would get and which I now have:
Because I play mainly Hawaiian Music I list the following in order of importance. No sound beats the Rickenbacher.
1. 1934 A-25 Rickenbacher Frypan Black Krinkle
2. 1945 Rickenbacher Bakelite Panda
3. 1950 D-8 Magnatone
4. 1960 D-8 Fender Stringmaster
5. D-8 Excel
6. S-8 Excel Frypan
7. S-8 Sierra
8. S-8 Custom Made Koa Wood Steel Guitar
9. S-6 Acoustic Oahu
In the near future I will be selling the Fender Stringmaster and the Sierra.

Joe says,
I will be gradually selling most of them but over time. That is the price of reality.
I am getting very, very old and my wife does not want to be in charge of selling steel guitars that she knows nothing about.Don! Din! Don! Don't do it!!!!!!! Never sole a firearm or a guitar that I did not regret it

Clinesmith T9 plank (or maybe T10 if spacing not too narrow)
(pic edited from a double neck to a triple)

Or maybe the elusive Magnatone quad⦠never even seen a picture.
If it had to be a lap steel as per the title, maybe a Gibson EH-185, (preferably 7 strings if the free vintage steel guitar fairies are listening)

I am fortunate to own some beautiful Rickenbacker lap steels and Fender consoles which sadly my abilities don't do justice. I am more than satisfied with them and won't be acquiring any more steel guitars. That being said if money were no object I would be in the market for a Bigsby T8 with pedals.
Likewise I have tweed Vibrolux and Tremolux replicas that are perfect for my needs and make my marginal playing abilities sound their best. But again, if I had unlimited funds, originals of the same amps would be cool.

I think that was my wife. Followed by "no".Kirk Francis wrote:who was it that said: "want keeps pace with wealth always" ?
A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first.
