I have owned a few guitars myself including MSA,Mullen, ShoBud, BMI and an Emmons P/P. I have always enjoyed the Emmons sound for my ears than any other steel. I sold the push pull a few years ago and sure wish I had it back. I should have my backside kicked for selling it. Everyone is different so I guess that is why we have such a broad market today. What sounds good to me may not sound as good to the next steeler. My personal favorite would have to be an Emmons guitar.

...Emmons' sound... Image Piercing highs and thin-tight bass...
(There are a lot cheaper and more readily-available brands if one wanted to sound like that.)

A characterization like this illustrates how the phrase, "THE Emmons sound" is so misleading. If an Emmons I know sounded like that, it would get transported to the lake and converted into crappie structure.

Ever hear Mike Johnson in his 1980s push-pull era? Big sound...very big. (Almost as big as the gaping mischaracterization/overgeneralization quoted above.)

Do some people EQ 'em thin? You bet. Fault of the guitar or operator error?

If someone drives a BMW into the ditch, does that mean it's a bad car?

If no P/P's?? (heaven forbid!) I've tried about6 all pull steels this past year and for my approach and style, the Zum is just great. Bruce is a master builder. However, I so enjoyed the other major brands I owned.

As a guitar player also, I love the different feel and sounds of the a Gibson, Tele, PRS, Gretsch etc guitars...but love them all! Same with the all the great steel companies...they are all making super steels! (Side note: I do have a '79 Emmons coming from Jerry Roller in a couple of days and will keep my great playing '79 ZUM lacquer)

I own a few PPs, and last fall got a D-10 Carter, which I have played out ever since then for the most part until a couple of weeks ago. My current fav PP is an early 80s D-10 which I brought out and played it on an outdoor festival. It sounded great, but I had got used to the smooth feel of the Carter. On my next gig which was indoors I brought the PP again, it sounded great, but I found myself missing some things I like about the Carter. The Carter plays real nice, has the XR-16 pups which I think give this Carter a "grainy" quality similar to PPs, but it's still different, and it's a "good" different, so with the contemporary Praise band gig in the morning and the American Legion gig tomorrow night, I think I'll take the Carter. If I get another "real" traditional counrty gig again soon, I'll probably take the PP. All my PPs do sound different from each other, but it's a "good" different too! Image
