Well if it "don't make sense" then I guess I wouldn't expect you to support it... or build it. Must just be some ignorant thought I had about 20 years ago... just hadn't ever been able to shake it! I don't think now, however, that it was you who is to build this guitar for me. "I'll try to keep my "self-fulfilling interests" and "senseless questions" to my self from now on.

Terry,
You may be taking what I said wrong. It was not said to ridicule or chaff you. It was said because I'm not sure of what you were asking or in what context you were asking it. No more, no less. The answer to hysteris was answered correctly by another person.
I apoligise if you took my comments the wrong way.

Terry...I think what Bobby is saying that there just isn't enough demand right now for a 13-string to justify putting time into the required design, and the added tooling costs.

It would be very hard to make a profit on a one-of-a-kind item.

There isn't much design work in making a 13 string guitar. After all, it's only one more string than a 12 and one less than a 14. (I should have majored in math!)

I don't know about the profit margin of 13 string guitars, but Bill Lawrence makes a 13 string pickup, an L713 I guess. While not a stock item, both Carter and Fessenden have built 13 string guitars. Fessenden, GFI, and Sierra make 14 string guitars too, and probably Carter would as well, if they haven't already.

Robert Randolph plays a 13 string, and I have one too.

To help clear this matter up as far as Terry is involved,,,,he has never ask me to make him a guitar of any kind,,,,at least that I can remember. If he wants a 13 string guitar, as Jim said, there are a few builders, including myself, who would build it for him. As to what it would cost, I don't know at this time. You would have to make some of the parts more or less "special" for it. We've basically made our designs so far for S-10 on a double frame with pad, D-10 and S-12 on a D-10 frame but with a wider top deck and neck and a narrower pad by about 3/4". Being a guitar that the parts are made on a CNC machine, it would necessitate a new and different program for the machine.
