This reminds me of a poll I started here a while back. Guitar was the obvious winner, Keyboard and Brass took place and show respectively, Lapsteel was in the middle, tied with Other Stringed and just ahead of Woodwind (my vote), and PSG was near the bottom, just ahead of Mallets. :P

A few folks know what a PSG is, but even fewer actually start their musical career on one.

Sacred Steel guitar players have been playing Randolph style Steel long before Randolph was born.

Bo, I dont think Bob was referring to ability, style or origin per se, but popularity, which is the topic of your thread.

I agree with Joe Casey... the steel is a little more difficult to play, but partly because they are harder to find for sale. Most music stores don't sell them, and you are lucky to even find a bar and picks.

Without the visibility and availablity, how can the steel ever become more popular?

Would any of you happen to know the statistics of the ratio between guitars and steel guitars?
is it a 1000/ to 1? 10,000 to 1? (Remember thousands of guitars are sold at Walmart, Toys R Us, and even at grocery stores for Christmas time)

Everything eventually rotates in the circle of life.

Years ago the steel player was loved by the audience, even competing very well with the singer, especially with the females, probably because the steel player was usually the youngest member of the band.

But time has passed and the steel player today is usually the oldest member of the band, not a good status for acceptance by today's audience.
