Monty Powell and Brett James still crank out some heavy hitters.

i've got an old sonny throckmorton album that's so bad and boring that my friends and i have regifted it back and forth endlessly to get rid of it. it's become a sick joke. no one wants it, but it's in good shape. it won't go away....i guess that's what makes a great songwriter.

Jamey Johnson is no third rate rocker. He is about as traditional coubtry as you can get these days.

Hey you two - show a little respect for the room. We don't allow fighting here. You guys can duke it out next time you meet in real life.

i always liked dean dillon and gary stewart, but gary departed. ...and since lyle lovett isn't from nashville...
and vern gosdin left...

maybe a better question would be 'what nashville songwriters have big heart and soul and which ones work the songwriting assembly line for hopes of big money'?

interestingly, however, some 'do' have a knack for blending the two.

Buddy,

It appears that you've accidentally stumbled into the Music section of the forum, for "Musical topics not directly related to steel guitar". Songwriting qualifies.

I honestly doubt any of us here is qualified to answer this vague question. You would have to know the writers of EVERY song recorded in Nashville. And what does "now" mean. Today, the last year, the last 5 years... Only number 1 songs, top 10 songs. The most recorded, which would include every song recorded that didn't make it to the charts, or even to a record store. This is a ridiculous question.
Carter D10 8p/7k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup, Regal RD40 Dobro (D tuning), Recording King Professional Dobro (G tuning), NV400, NV112, Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open G slide and regular G tuning guitar) .

Playing for 55 years and still counting.

I haven't heard any "country" songs I liked in years. Even if they'd been cut as actual country songs I wouldn't like them. The melodies and lyrics are just too banal. I suspect there are some good country songwriters who just aren't getting any cuts because they're too country. In fact I know at least one who's been getting bluegrass cuts on his country songs.

Those guys in Texas - Hooker, Flores, Trevino et al. - are doing some really great music, but they could use some songwriting help - they keep re-cutting Price and Bush songs. The bar has been set pretty high, but isn't there somebody somewhere who can write a song on a par with "The Other Woman" or "Whiskey River"?

Cal, was "In Color" banal?, was "Give It Away" not country enough, ..not to only mention Jamie Johnson but
Did "Twang" have enough Twang for you? How about jsut here for a Good Time?

There is plenty of country out there, it's just not making the radio charts like we would like..

Right now.. if it's too country , it's not getting played.. they are trying real hard to bring in a younger demographic by not playing hard core country.

None of those songs ring a bell, Bo, although a drunk out in the parking lot did play some Jamey Johnson for me one night. I don't hear any of the radio stuff unless I'm at K-mart or have to learn one for a gig, like I did last weekend when I charted "Sweetest Thing". I don't care what's on the Top 40, since I don't listen to the radio. There's plenty of the music I want to hear on the internet. I just don't like watered down boring music targeted at 30-something housewives with 2.3 kids who shop at Wal-Mart, whether it be country or rock or something else.

Everyone has their own idea what country is - The Carter Family, Bill Monroe, Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, Ray Price, Bob Wills and so on. I like the latter 2, and as long as I can get gigs playing mostly that I'm OK.

But I do think we need some new shuffle writers. Whisperin' Bill probably has some great songs in his sock drawer that are 2Country4Nashville.

I don't like top 40 either but it's my business to at least listen up. Plus I get to steal all those great licks and ideas from Paul. :P

btw.. I still haven't heard Red Solo Cup and really don't care to, but I know someone will request it and the band will try it next week

I have worked Top 40 gigs and I did learn songs off the radio. It was my business, too, but I became slightly disenchanted with the music business, and it's not really my business anymore, although I still like to bitch about it. I learned "Couldn't Leave You If I Tried" and "Don't Rock the Jukebox". Cool steel parts. Singers still do "Jukebox", like it's going to be one of those classics that'll never fall into desuetude.

I feel compelled to mention another thing that bugs me, and that's the somehow artificial sound that you hear on records these days. I don't know much about sound engineering - when I do a session I just go through the board and let the engineer tweak me :o and I always get a good sound - but from what people tell me, it's the compression that they use on sessions these days, and it's something beyond the old analogue vs digital argument. Brad Paisley, for instance, has some country stuff, but it just doesn't sound right. Not like a vinyl record on Columbia produced by Don Law.

Here's a country tune called "Back When ET Was Still Around" that I played steel guitar on. Written by Dave Lindsey, one of the local songwriters (and co-writer with Anderson on a few tunes) whose output is a little too country for Music Row. It's just a demo, and I don't think a major artist ever cut it. But it's country, and it's not compressed all to hell.

Oh, and another thing - I'm pretty irate about "House" not being on tonight due to some country music awards show. :x

Whatever!
Cal, I'm sure steel guitar will be aired on the award show tonight. You don't have to like it. The fans buy the music they like.

I'm a House fan!
