I heard the 6.3k feedback also, but it was each time Vince stepped up and started singing, and there is NO way you can say Vince has bad mic technique. Thing is I didn't see a wedge in front of him, so I don't know where it came from, but I'm pretty sure it was Vince's vocal mic.

She really didn't branch out very much melodically. Even on the recording, it's pretty basic. I can't see any singer in town securing a record deal with such a vocal performance. Sorry, but there is very little soul on that record. Most of the soul that I'm hearing is from VG's bgv's.
Kyle, I think you're nit-picking….
Bottom line is that she did great on the awards, but I don't see it as being anything more than a promo for the movie.
Kind of a given, wouldn't you say? I don't think GP is going to give up her day gig anytime soon, for a career as a country singer.

I think she's refreshing she took me back to early Loretta & Patty! I wonder if country radio is playing her new single?

While we're on the subject, a friend of mine sent me this, this morning …..

LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF THE TENNESSEAN

A 90-year-old saved the CMA Awards Show
Nov. 13, 2010, Letter to the Editor
There are many things I don’t know … why there are public schools, how electricity works, why some think they can sing. I do know one thing … pitch. I learned it in junior high choir; it doesn’t take a metropolitan opera star!

I am too old, fat and ugly to clean out a tour bus, but I can still hit a note squarely on the head, keep it between the lines and soar above the heads of most … without auto-tuning.

The CMA’s discovered once again that a large group of young, thin, pretty children can’t find a pitch no matter how much money they make. And why? Most of these baby-faced music studs and studettes have not spent half their lives playing bars and honky-tonks, honing their craft to be worthy of a record deal.

Someone says, “Hey, he looks really good in a pair of tight jeans” or “can we get her to pull that blouse down a little lower.” There was a handful who proved they could sing; one most notably, an actress. Frankly, she has better pipes and is more “pitch-savvy” than most.

Thank God for Loretta Lynn. For a minute, I thought real talent was gone. But who ever thought of putting a 90-year-old legend, who can also sing on pitch, behind a pair of goggles, should be tied to a concert grand, made to breathe stage fog, and listen to a first-year piano student attempt to play and sing.

Alvin, you'll have to talk to Ken about that one, I neglected to proofread the letter.
I'm sure Loretta will appreciate you standing up for her, though. ;-)

That's right Little Jimmy did the lame flooding skit, and he will turn 90 in about a month.

The problem with all this hooplah and how great Gwinneth is and how not so great others may be is that right now GP gets the airplay the TV time and the exposure, everyone loves GP..Me too...

But, some other carrer road warrior trying to get a break has lost an opportunity..there is only so much room for airplay and "in your face marketing". This was a known given that GP would get the exposure of the day.

GP will enjoy success and be raved upon, right here by our own breatheren for singing a good song, then she will move on and go back to doing what she does, Movies, and in 2 years our same " raving breatheren " will complain that there is no good Country music on the radio.

Well maybe if the "markets" and the "breatheren stopped caving to the moment , some other unknown would get the chance instead of being drowned out.

Let me go back to Taylor Swift who has been dissed in this thread, she is working hard as a writer and a performer, holding her own in a very tough enviornment, is she the best singer ? maybe not but she IS a good singer , a good writer and she is connecting to millions...and she is keeping road musicians working...

Diss her all you want, but she is viable and doing positive things for Country Music. And not as a side line from being a Movie star...

How many road musicians is GP going to put on the payroll over the next few years..?

How many studio players are going to get the call to work on GP albums ?

How many struggling great female singers will get a call to do a track in a major movie which would catapult them into a good career...?

OR we can all just rave at how great GP is and how lousy others are..then complain again in a year or so...

I like GP but with her exposure possibly comes the doom of another career seeking artist who proably is trying to get a release and exposure at the exact same time.

Tony, no argument about any of your points, but speaking for myself, I was not "caving to the moment". As I stated, I am hesitant to give the movie stars, race car drivers and all the other celebrities they trot out any advance credit for exactly the reasons you very well pointed out. It does put another deserving artist in the shadows.
However, it was evident GP was no singing novice trading on her star power. She sang great and for me, her material had more substance. I didn't mind also that she had a good supporting cast that was featured prominently.

The point can also be made that the divas they keep force feeding us are taking the slots of other deserving artists like Rebecca Lynn Howard (and so on)who can actually sing on pitch and look good also.

All in all, it wasn't the worst TV special in recent years.

Agreed, totally..

I am just offering a different prospective.. pesonally I don't have an issue with anyone who can make a living in this business, even those who supposedly cannot sing on key all the time

I'm one of them !

I just don't see any value in dissing them.

I play lots of gigs where I can play better, be in tune better, sing better whatever..I think that goes for all of us, but maybe not, maybe I'm the only one who needs to improve.

Talor Swift has found a market for herself, obviously millions agree..my 24 year old daughter agrees ,she is not a Country Music fan but now sometimes will take a listen , she has been influenced by TS. The really great singers, great players etc..may have other issues that cause the demise of careers...maybe it's got nothing to do with how great they sing or play... who can really say..

still tuning

Tony, if it's any consolation, TS is doing very well for herself despite the competition and the criticism. I don't think GP is considering a career as a country singer anytime soon, so the up-and-comings need not worry about not getting their fifteen minutes. Bottom line, GP did herself proud, not to the detriment of anyone else.

Bummer, I thought it was Gene Parsons.

All kidding aside, I thought it was cool to see the players there and not in the shadows, especially Jim Lauderdale and Dan Dugmore.
