As Mark suggested check out some of her earlier stuff on you tube. I think it's better than her current stuff but as someone said, it's whatever sells.

The Nashville establishment sure seemed to like her. Shortly after we recorded the independent album, Tony Brown signed on to produce the first label album. He had a fall and hurt himself badly, and immediately Garth Fundis jumped in to produce.
Although we had been playing to large crowds regionally, we had done nothing much in Nashville. After the first showcase we did at 12th and Porter, there were reps from 7 labels in a line on the stairs to the green room to talk deal.
I've never seen anything like it.
Seems like they all saw something marketable.

Tony I agree with the 3 you named. I hardly ever listen to "country" radio anymore but get exsposed to it because our lead singer is always bringing that junk to learn. I have to listen to an hour of "country " radio to hear maybe 1 song I like. It's frustrating

No, Theresa, they made me bandleader right around the time we got the record deal, we played some regional shows and they went on tour with Martina McBride as an acoustic trio... and I never heard from them again. Not a peep.
As far as I know, they've only used steel on recordings. The guitar player bought a Gretsch lap steel to add some slidy sounds.

an interview with Jennifer Nettles

Post by Bo Borland »

Here is a link to a recent interview Jen did with No Depression...it says a lot about who she is, where she wants to go ..and it's not at all politically correct ..

it will probably really tick off the opinionated steel owners here on the SGF.

I have never been a fan of non country music being played on MY country stations either...I mean I didn't like a lot of what the power pop groups played on country stations, I still don't ..
I like BARN JOVI, just not on my country station..

that's not to say it isn't good or without merit.. it's just that I think it belongs somewhere else.

Just because it doesn't have pedal steel on it.. doesn't mean it sucks

Jen says
"This is not your grandma's country," she says about the group's fourth studio album, The Incredible Machine, released today (October 19) on Mercury Nashville. "Country is cool and it's hip and it's young and it's fresh."

you have to read the rest..

In the name (Topic) of this thread, what does "why not solo" mean?

I imagine the goofy looking guy with the fake cowboy hat is there because:

1. There's probably a contract that stipulates he's to be there.
2. He's a co-songwriter and part of the 'act'.
3. Why mess with a formula which seems to be working?

Nettles can obviously sing, and I trust that if someone like Mark Van Allen was working with her, there's plenty worthwhile under the hood, musically speaking. I know a couple of singers who resemble Jennifer in a lot of ways and haven't hit it like this yet, but may. Just let's say that Mark's story doesn't surprise me.

Personally, what I'm having trouble understanding is why No Depression is putting (even virtual) ink into this - I guess times is tough. There's no 'roots' in what I've hear of this kind of high-production stuff. Pure power-pop, to my ears. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't quite get how it's remotely relevant to the ND audience. Based on the reader comments underneath the article, I imagine I'm not alone in that bewilderment.

I am no fan either.. my kid heard "Glue" yesterday on the TV .. she never knew it was longer than 2 seconds..
Every time I hear her voice I have a unstoppable reaction to punch a button on the radio.

Nashville producers have be requesting that singers over accentuate and even fake a "southern drawl" for years.
I guess they think it makes their work sound more "authentic".

That sounds like somebody trying to sell me something I don't really need.

The ND blog states, "Sugarland, essentially the power pairing of Georgia peach Nettles and her songwriting partner/multi-instrumentalist/comedic foil Kristian Bush, likes to continually stretch the boundaries of the generic genre known as classic country."

I just knew there was a reason for his being there! ;-)

OK, thanks, I thought you were talking about a steel solo or a banjo solo or something.

Not "solo". We want her to sing "so low" that we can't hear her. That would make me very happy.

ENVY ? Charles, are we all supposed to like every artist and every form of music ?

As popular as you think JN is, she pales compared to some rappers in the big picture...do you have envy for the rappers ?

JN is a good singer but she is stuck on "Style # 1" which is fine for her career... I think what many are saying is " Style # 1 is getting old "

By the way, what happened to the other gal that was part of the trio, she didn't fit the look ?

I'm sure at some point JN will make a solo record , start a solo career , but the trick is will she have been way over exposed by then ...yet to be determined.

This young lady will probably go a long way in the music business..How long she will stay popular is anyone's guess..Can she sing? Well, of course she can sing,,anyone with and ear at all can hear that.. .Does she put on the dog? Yes...That's part of the act and they have been doing it for years... Think about it...She looks good and knows how to act and is into the new style,,,which is what is selling right now...It's all about money,,and good business...
I am probably older that a lot of people on this forum and I like to hear something new,,which doesn't mean that I like all the new stuff...I turn it off just like the rest of you...I don't like every song that any artist does,,,never did,,never will...
There are only a few artists today with distinctive voices,,such as Josh Turner and a few more,,and even they have a hard time staying in the game...Sadly,,it's not so much about the musical talent,,as it is the looks and knowing how to move and act...The days of just standing up there and belting a good song are gone...Carson

Bush's beans

Post by Gary Meyer »

Yes Mr Bush is realated to the Bush Beans' empire. I heard it on a radio interview. (Maybe that gave him some pull at some point).
