I think it's fairly well known that artists like the Ventures & the Rolling Stones based at least some of their popularity on the fact that teenage boys with guitars all over the world could figure out and play their songs. Popular music, pretty much by definition, can't be too challenging to sing along with.

Have you ever noticed that Madonna, with all her millions, has never taken singing lessons and has never "improved" a bit? When she came out, she sang like a monotonous ten-year-old girl - and she still does. Hint: "her" demographic was ten-year-old girls....

Have you ever noticed that rap music bears an uncanny resemblance to nursery rhymes? Pornographic, violent dope-dealing nursery rhymes, but it's easy for the kids to chant along, dog knows what happens when you internalize those mantras.

I think it likely that Young Taylor, having found she can sell a bazillion downloads to little girls with her tuneless half-octave meanderings, is likely to continue - tuneless, half-octave meanderings - right up until it doesn't work anymore. Ask Pete Drake - ask Bruce Springsteen - ask Mick Jagger. You ride the horse until the horse dies.
