Marty Stuart

Post by Dave A. Burley »

I did see Ray on Marty's show and he amazes me as he get's better with age. I also know that Buddy is retired but it sure would be nice.
Maybe some of you might recall a few years back when I was trying to put together an idea for the
Grand Ole Opry to honor Buddy on the hour tv portion of the Grand Ole Opry. I had done my homework...I did contact Price's, Willie Nelson's and Johnny Bush's people and I got responses that they would be interested in being part of such a show. I had even contacted the Everly Brothers people and was told that the show would be about the only thing that the brothers might be interested in doing.
I contacted the classic country hating manager of the Opry. I was flat turned down. What a great show that would have been. I thought it was a good idea but the powers that be at the Opry apparently didn't think so.

Charles, to me Marty Stewart's voice trails off flat, or off-key at the end of singing a musical phrase....it's difficult to listen....a little like Porter Wagoner....guess I miss hearing vocals like Ray Price and Merle Haggard.

You need to listen to Marty's country gospel CD he released several years ago, Soul's Chapel.

Micky,Nothing wrong with stateing your opinion. I agree some of the greats like ET, Mr. Roy,Stonewall,Miss Kitty, were not perfect pitch singers, but all of them had something far more important. STYLE . :D Something you see VERY,VERY,VERY.LITTLE of today.YOU BETCHA,DYK?BC.

Hey Mickey, I've known Marty for 20 +years now and I think he has what so many newer singers lack: "soul". Sometimes a soulful singer might not always have perfect pitch, but they grab you by the heart whenever they sing the song. I always think about Bob Dylan here. He has a soul that makes you believe every word he sings. From a musician's perspective, I used to say WOW! he is way off pitch, but the longer I have done this music thing (since I was around 9), I have gotten to be around a lot of interesting music people. It has been like going to school, because you start to understand things that still made no sense to me when I was a teenager or even a young adult. This has helped me to understand why so many artists that I personally wouldn't walk across the street to see have become some of the biggest stars.
There's an old saying in Nashville: "A great singer can make you think an average song is great, but a great song will still be a great song no matter who sings it". That works for me with instrumental music too. I always get a lump in my throat when I here the Big "E" play "Blue Jade". When I was a kid my uncle played steel in my mom and dad's country band (I was the drummer), and he would do that song too. That melody got my attention way back then, and I realize Buddy has such a cool knack for a melody (not to mention soul). Some modern Nashville songwriters might wanna take a listen to his stuff for some melodic inspiration. Imagine new country songs with an Emmons influence! HA!!

Paul, you are a gentleman, sir. Marty's vocals do come across as very soulful to me, and the harmonies are absolutely killer. Personally, I hope that Marty and the Superlatives don't ever change a single thing.

Well... er... maybe make the show a full hour. That'd be OK by me.

Can't wait for the next show!

Mickey,Its not me they are concerned about :) But OK I should have stopped with the tongue cheek part sorry  .. The Marty Stuart show is the best thing to come around in a while..Watching the Emmy Lou rerun this week I could not get over how great and close to the original sound the music and the harmonies were..These guys must have a great catalog of songs in the head.."Superlative" is the correct name for this band..

Both have soul and believability. I would listen, and still do, anytime, to both dudes.

The big difference, however, and hope we never lose sight of this, is, Bob Dylan trumps everyone else with, simply, his prolific poetic songwriting.

That alone, has and will stand the test of time.

And Marty, too, will certainly stand the test of time.
