Thanks, Mitch. I always loved those licks whoever it was. I think you're right about Johnny Voit. Jim Colvard did play in Nashville for a long time. I know he played some gigs with Don Williams around the late 80's as well. I believe he was part of the Are Code 615 LP.

Here is another Dudley tune to digest:

This is likely Dave's first recording (1953) and was probably done in Wisconsin or Minnesota with Dave's own band members.

I don't know the personnel, but the recording has some very distinctive steel guitar.

Hi guys, it was Jimmy Colvard who played on the original record, It's his lick. The only song recorded with Dave was "There ain't no easy run". Thats all I played on the record tapped my toe until the lick was needed. Pretty easy bucks :D

Dudley first recorded Six Days for his own label, Golden Wing, in early 1963. It was a hit record.

A few months later, he recorded and released "Cowboy Boots" on the same label. It was also a hit.

Both songs were recorded in Minnesota. Colvard and Voit were both supposedly on the session.

In late 1963, he was signed by Mercury and recorded his first LP for that label called "Songs Of The Working Man". It was done in Nashville with Colvard and the Nashville A team. Voit was not present.

Six Days and Cowboy Boots were both on this Mercury LP.

As I understand it, the versions on the Mercury LP are re-recordings and are NOT the original Golden Wing hits from earlier in the year. The Mercury remakes are supposed to be very close to the Golden Wing versions.

I am not sure I have ever heard BOTH versions of Six Days and am wondering if the version most of us are familiar with is the Golden Wing version or the Mercury version? If you go to Amazon or somewhere and buy the mp3, how do you know which version you bought??
