Pete:
Yeah, I take your point. They probably figured they had to fill 3 CDs to properly market the thing and so had to make the definitions as broad as possible.
I have no problem with that, but I'd like to understand why anyone would regard this as country music if they had no idea about the song's pedigree:

But then, the package is called "The Black Experience in Country Music" and doesn't overtly say the selections are "country music", which is fine.

My grandfather, a wonderful man who was as much a racist as anyone I ever met, LOVED Charley. It was amazing to watch him sit in the living room of their home in his recliner, tapping his toes together quietly when Charley was on television or the console stereo. It was one of the formative moments in my youth when I realized that there was a disconnect there, and that the attitudes my forebears showed towards people of color didn't make sense. It made an enormous impression on me; he also had a deep love for Ray Charles' songs, both the country and the R&B stuff and I doubt he EVER listened to another R&B singer.

I was once in a large night club where I watched Ray Charles be racially heckled by a loud drunk. It was during a ballad. It lasted through one whole song. I was boiling mad. I was going to go over and get physical with the guy, but at the end of the song the guy was picked up and bounced out the rest of his table. Ray Charles played and sang like the guy wasn't even there. Apparently other people complained. I use to go see Ray Charles every chance I could get when he came around. He could sing anything and make it sound good. He really understood and appreciated white country music. Its universal. Good music is good music. I think that the master musicians/performers are capable of playing any type of music no matter what genre and reach an audience emotionally. I love the Sacred Steelers.

SOME YEARS AGO....MY FRIEND O.B. McCLINTON AND I
CO-WROTE A SONG TITLED...."AMERICAN SOUL" WHICH
WAS RELEASED ON AN "EPIC" ALBUM BY O.B.!
IT WAS A SONG THAT ASKED AND ANSWERED THE QUESTION,
"WHAT IS COUNTRY MUSIC?" IT WAS REALLY VERY
"COUNTRY" WHICH IS WHAT O.B. WAS!
HE WAS A GREAT COUNTRY WRITER (EVEN WROTE SOME OF
GEORGE JONES' SONGS) AND WAS HIMSELF A GREAT SINGER!
HE WENT TO BE WITH THE LORD IN THE EARLY 80'S!
I DO AND WILL FOREVER MISS HIM!
