To get back to the context of the thread (amazing bass player(s)); Here's a YouTube link, I just found on a bass player I've admired since the 70's, as a member of the band Weather Report, Miroslav Vitous. What tone and execution. I love it! :D

I don't particularly like my bass player on 5 string in my R&B band, guitar, bass, drums, singer. The reason is that sometimes there is too much distance between his notes and mine. If I lower my register on guitar, it gets muddy. If he raises his, everything is better. Just my preference. I do not like bass as lead instrument, just doesn't work for me. JP

Need to give a shout-out for Ron Carter: "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face."

Or for modern, Abraham Laborial's solo in Sade's 'Smooth Operator'.
Who can argue that wasn't well placed, melodic, and tasteful.
It works beautifully as a lowering of dynamics
only helping to increase the power of the song
as it builds up energy with the sax after it.
DLD, Chili farmer. Plus bananas and papaya too.

Real happiness has no strings attached.
But pedal steels have many!
