Most definitely. The examples are too numerous to mention. The performer-songwriter model is relatively recent. It's quite common for songwriters in country music to become well known as writers without have fame as a performing artist. Is this common in other genres of music?
I wouldn't get too worked up about this slight - it only reflects on the comcast writers' ignorance. There is a Songwriters Hall of Fame - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inductees_ ... ll_of_Fame - Although it leans most heavily to other more mainstream styles, you'll see that Harlan Howard, Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Jimmie Rodgers, Fred Rose, Jimmy Webb, and Hank Williams are among the more country-oriented songwriters inducted.
